What People Are Saying About Herculaneum
It was a very full day but well worth it. Our driver Angelo was awesome, his English was excellent, and his driving was careful and amazing - he negotiated us through the crazy Naples peak hour traffic, and some very hairy situations involving coaches on hairpin bends on Mt Vesuvius! He personally walked us to where we had to go each time, and was able to get us in front of the line for most things which saved a lot of time. Pompeii was incredible, but we found the audio guide a bit confusing and feel like we missed out on a bit, even with the 2 1/2 hours we had. We hired a guide to take us around Herculaneum later in the day and that was completely worth it, we wished we'd taken up the offer of a guide for Pompeii too. The hike up Vesuvius was tough but not too long, and the views of the crater and the towns below were amazing. Angelo also booked our lunch at a restaurant on the mountain where the service was slow but the food was fantastic. A very worthwhile and interesting day.
Pick up at Naples train and transport to Naples port and then on to Pompeii was perfect. Lunch was a bit rushed to say the least and then we had to wait an hour to be transported to Ercolano, but driver made sure he picked us up in Ercolano so we could make our Naples train. Very happy about that. Wanted to do both Pompeii and Ercolano and you made that possible. Our walking tours in Rome were conducted by CONTEXT. I think you and they should get together. They could offer their expertise in the history and you could provide the transportation which they do not do. My thought was they could offer a tour of one of the Emperors and follow his military campaign and then on to summer houses etc. Tiberius in Rome and then on to Pompeii and then on to Capri. I really believe their is a large market for this type of touring -- in depth with a docent with credentials and your transportation. They could do one emperor or two. Context walkers thought it was a good idea.
This tour was fine as only a small amount of time was spent at the cameo factory/store. We booked it for the ruins and the Pompeii guide was knowledgeable and interesting. An audio guide at Herculaneum would have been nice, a licensed guide ever better. We were not advised to pick up the audio. I would have preferred more time there, possibly in lieu of the so-so luncheon. A sandwich on the van with bottled water would have been sufficient and left more time for the ruins. I had not been there for 40 years and the vast amount of excavation since that time was overwhelming.
