What to Expect
Along the north-east coast and through the gorge of St. Georg you can reach the cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos on the coast of the Gulf of Mirabello. Agios Nikolaos is famous for its picturesque bottomless lake to entwine the numerous legends and was explored by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. Explore the pretty town on your own, you can stroll through the shops or relax in one of the cafes and watch the hustle and bustle.
It goes on to Elounda, along one of the roads with the most beautiful views in Crete. The lagoon of Elounda enchanted with the islands Kolokitha and Spinalonga. The latter was an important part of the history of ancient Greece: it served as a natural protection for the ancient city of Olous, the Saracens as hiding places for its pirates, Venetians fortress, the Turks as a settlement and has long been a leper colony.
After a short drive from Plaka, a small fishing village just opposite Spinalonga. From there, take a small boat in ten minutes to the island. Plaka was the ferry port of leper colony, whose history has been documented in a book and a Greek television series. Visit the sites of shooting, you can enjoy a lunch or enjoy a refreshing swim.
The last stop of the day is Elounda, a former fishing village which is a famous tourist resort with the most five-star hotels in Greece today. There is plenty of time to stroll through the picturesque harbor and have a coffee before finally back goes towards rentals.
