What to Expect
After leaving central Crete and the first “Hellenico”, go towards Mires, heading the south.
The first stop will be the monastery of Panagia Kaliviani. An old icon depicting the Annunciation gave its name to the monastery, which turned into a Christian state after the addition of an orphanage, a nursing home, a housekeeping school, a girl's institution, a primary school, a kindergarten, a camp, as well as textile, knitting and vestments’ workshops. Here you can still see the miraculous icon of the Annunciation. After a short journey through traditional villages we reach the entrance of the spectacular track downstairs to the gorge of “Agia Farangi”. After a short ride across the gravel track begins the walk to the beach of the Gorge of Agia Farangi.
A truly sacred place. Called the "sacred Gorge" or also Gorge of the hermits, is a natural paradise with a forest of Oleander bushes and many other plants amid the bleak and rugged rocks. The rock walls go steeply upwards and pull together gradually. Also a paradise for climbers. The vertical walls of the gorge is breath taking. On the way you will see the large caves were some hermits lived there until 1985.
After approximately 30 minutes of an easy walk, you'll reach the Church of St. Anthony. It was built once in a rock niche and was the center of the religious area. The last transept was built in the 15th century and is preserved on a very old olive tree. One is Be fascinated by the atmosphere, and the well-hidden cave, the sacred place of the hermits. Exit the gorge to the stunning beach, with fine pebbles and clear-blue waters, which are usually very calm. West of the beach lies a beautiful arch, beneath which you can swim. Vertical cliffs surround the beach, on where you might see hermits praying.
After a long bath and plenty of time to enjoy this wondrous region, you'll slowly return to the car. End the day with a visit in Matala, the famous beach of the last hippies from all over the world. Here you'll have the opportunity to enjoy the clear-crystal water, the warmth of the sun and, later, as modern hippies, you can explore the prehistoric caves that are carved on the steep rocks of the area. Finally the last highlight of the day. An amazing delicious sunset dinner in one of the many small taverns by the sea. With many new impressions and after the fabulous sunset, go back to your hotel or apartment.
