Experience the best travel stories for yourself! Join a local expert and uncover hidden gems on this Lonely Planet Experience.

Meet you guide a few blocks away from the Terminal de Ferris Ferry terminal and receive an overview of the Cuban food scene. Learn the difference between “local” and “tourist” currencies and how local chefs cope with the ever-changing availability of goods. Start your tour by digging into delicious congrejitos – fried dough shaped like crab legs filled with guava. Visit a crepe shop and try one of their savory fish-filled crepes. There you’ll meet the owner, a Japanese woman who married a Cuban. Hear her story and learn what it was like for her to move to Havana and build a life there.

Try a Cuban hamburger, made from ground pork or chorizo, and learn about how this American classic came to also be a Cuban favorite. Grab some papa rellena, stuffed, fried mashed potato balls, or some croquetas (fried, breaded balls filled with meat, cheese or vegetables). Depending on what’s available that day you may be able to visit a little stand that sells amazing frituras de maiz (corn fritters).

Drink a refreshing batido (fruit shake) made by a young entrepreneur in his 20’s. Learn about Cuban fruits such as mamey, and guanabana, and popular drinks such as guarapo. Stop by the iconic Peso Pizza Shop and try a slice of pizza topped with locally produced cheese. End your tour in Plaza Vieja with some coconut ice cream, a local favorite. Before you go, be sure to ask your local guide for tips on what else to see and do, and where else to eat, while you’re in town.
