Overview
Explore the pagoda temples surrounding Hanoi on a full-day trip to the Perfume Pagoda and Thien Tru Pagoda. Trek through deep green forest and ride boats down the scenic Yen River, passing towering limestone cliffs and sampling local street food.
What to Expect
Escape Hanoi on a full-day trip to the Perfume Pagoda complex, one of the most important religious sites for Buddhists in Vietnam. It’s here that every spring, thousands of pilgrims come to pray for health and prosperity to get them through the year.

The only way to access the site is by boat, but first you will take a scenic drive through the picturesque backroads to Duc village. Pause for refreshments before boarding your boats for the 1.5-hour ride along the Yen River. Sail past dramatic limestone cliffs, sweeping up from the banks of the river.

Hike on to Thien Tru Pagoda (Heaven’s Kitchen). Also known as Chua Ngoai (Outer Pagoda), the temple complex includes the Vien Cong Bao Stupa, where Ch’an Master Vien Quang, who led the pagoda reconstruction, is buried.

Continue to Perfume Cave and Pagoda. The vast complex of Buddhist shrines was built into the limestone Huong Tich Mountains hundreds of years ago, though historians debate the precise date. The pagodas spread among the limestone hills and tropical forest to create a staggering spectacle.

Visit Giai Oan Temple (Clearing Unjust Charges) and Tuyet Son Pagoda, considered by many to be the 2nd most beautiful of the temple complex. Stop for lunch at one of the food stalls near Thien Tru Pagoda, then sail back along the Yen River to join the return bus to Hanoi.
