The Northwest is relatively untouched by the outside world. Beautiful scenery and idyllic villages make this area well worth a visit. Have lunch in a traditional stilt-house, travel through fertile valleys and along roads snaking through mountain passes.
What to Expect
Mai Chau is located 150 km North West of Hanoi and takes some three and a half hours to reach.
Mai Chau is the heart of a beautiful valley that is a world away from the hustle of Hanoi. The modern village is an unappealing sprawl, but as you emerge on the rice fields and rural living is transformed into a real paradise. It?s a stunning area, and the most people here are ethnic White Thai, distantly related to tribes in Thailand, Laos and China.
Just an hour and a half out of Hanoi after Hoa Binh, the road will slowly weave itself through mountains, fertile valleys and traditional villages.
Arrive in the picturesque Mai Chau Valley, and then enjoy a delicious Vietnamese lunch. Following your meal soak up the idyllic natural surroundings of the area by taking a walk around the surrounding villages.
