5 must-sees on any Hamburg walking tour

Hamburg is one of Germany's most engrossing cities, offering something for everyone. Whichever walking tour you book, be sure to catch these highlights!

Hamburg's City Hall is a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance architecture. If you don't have time to check out the inside, be sure to glimpse the glorious Hygieia fountain in its vast courtyard.

Historic churches

Hamburg's old churches have certainly suffered, you can still see the restored St. Michael's and ruins of St. Nicholas'. The latter was briefly the world's tallest building!

Elbe Philharmonic Hall

The Elbphilharmonie isn't scheduled to be finished until 2017, but it's already taking shape as one of the city's most striking modern monuments.

With its buildings raised on stilts, Hamburg's warehouse district is a sight in itself. You'll also find unique attractions like its famous coffee roastery and the Spice Museum.

Hamburg's red-light district is the world's largest, but there are also historic buildings and music venues amid all the debauchery. Still, don't bring the kids!

Planning Your Visit

How do the free tours work?

Free walking tours are perfect for those visiting on shoestring budgets or simply unsure how much to pay in advance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a catch! Remember your guide does this for a living so bring some cash and pay what you think it was worth at the end. If you don't, make sure you can handle the guilt-trip!

How hard is it?

Hamburg walking tours can last up to five hours, but most are in the region of two to three hours. If that still seems like hard-going, why not choose a shorter, more specialized tour, perhaps around a certain district of your choice, or around themed landmarks - how about the venues where The Beatles played?

What People Are Saying About Hamburg

Rainy Germany day didn't stop this from being a great tour

Our tour guide Michael, a native English speaker, kept the tour moving and was adaptable to the scattered showers so common in Germany. His facts were provided in an interesting and entertaining way that was never dull and was very helpful with recommendations.

A great introduction to the Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Guide was knowledgeable and provided a superb introduction to the city. Despite the cold (although warm for December) her enthusiasm was infectious and she deserved full marks for providing a real and meaningful insight to the city, past and present; highly recommended.

A fantastic experience in the most famous district of Hamburg

We booked the English Tour and we ended up having a private tour for 2 people. The guide Katja rang half an hour before the tour to double check that we were coming and we were able to find the meeting point. Not something that other tour guide company do so often! Our guide Katja was excellent, very informative and ready to give more information when asked. She did a very interesting tour and also she was really discreet and not obvious at all in one contest where it would have been easy to do so. She knows everything about the place and being local she also will tell you the anecdotes about the city of Hamburg. Her English is perfect and I strongly recommend to ask for her for the Tour. The stop at the apartment on the main square is a nice plus given to the tour! A must do in Hamburg!!

funny, interesting and for free - what better way to see the city

Our guide Brent was very entertaining and kept us all engaged the entire 2 hours. The tour was interesting starting with the town hall and a bit of history, then a walk to the church and the warehouse district. Highly recommend this to get familiar with Hamburg if you are a first timer. Great show at the end of this tour.
