Hamburg is one of Germany's most engrossing cities, offering something for everyone. Whichever walking tour you book, be sure to catch these highlights!
Hamburg's City Hall is a masterpiece of neo-Renaissance architecture. If you don't have time to check out the inside, be sure to glimpse the glorious Hygieia fountain in its vast courtyard.
Hamburg's old churches have certainly suffered, you can still see the restored St. Michael's and ruins of St. Nicholas'. The latter was briefly the world's tallest building!
The Elbphilharmonie isn't scheduled to be finished until 2017, but it's already taking shape as one of the city's most striking modern monuments.
With its buildings raised on stilts, Hamburg's warehouse district is a sight in itself. You'll also find unique attractions like its famous coffee roastery and the Spice Museum.
Hamburg's red-light district is the world's largest, but there are also historic buildings and music venues amid all the debauchery. Still, don't bring the kids!
Free walking tours are perfect for those visiting on shoestring budgets or simply unsure how much to pay in advance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is a catch! Remember your guide does this for a living so bring some cash and pay what you think it was worth at the end. If you don't, make sure you can handle the guilt-trip!
Hamburg walking tours can last up to five hours, but most are in the region of two to three hours. If that still seems like hard-going, why not choose a shorter, more specialized tour, perhaps around a certain district of your choice, or around themed landmarks - how about the venues where The Beatles played?

We booked to go on the Tour and turned up about 2o minutes before the schuduled time. Other people arrived and we figured there was German speaking group and and English speaking group. The german gude arrived but no English Guide. At about 10 minutes after the start time I sent and email and then approach the German guide and to ask him what was happening. He phoned the booking company and got to speak to a girl. First she said we arrived too late and then changed her response that we booked too late. I said we booked two days ago, so she said it was canclled because there was not enough guests. But there were 7 people waiting. She that said we could do the tour the next day, but 5 of the 7 said they could not do so I asked her for a guarantee that it woul go ahead. So we turned up the next day and did the tour with just 3 guests. While the tour was good and informative the booking company is just plain shonky.
I was in Hamburg with my parents for my mum’s birthday trip and we took part in the 2 hour German tour of Hamburg City and Speicherstadt led by Martin. I had researched this free walking tour in advance and hoped it would be good. As it turned out, it was not ‘just’ good, it was fantastic – in fact, it was the highlight of our weekend. Martin was very knowledgeable and truly a born storyteller. He brought the city’s history to life with his captivating anecdotes and wealth of insight and knowledge. He raised very interesting topics linking the past with the present and leaving the audience with food for thought on several issues. I cannot recommend Martin highly enough – best tour I have ever taken part in!
All concerts at the Elbphilharmonie were sold out so we opted for a guided tour in order to get a little taste of that magnificent building. It was great fun and very interesting, - our guide spoke excellent English and gave us an insight to the colourful history of the building. We went up to the plaza in beautiful weather and enjoyed the view. The area is stunning. I look even more forward to coming again to Hamburg and be sure to have booked tickets to a concert at the Elbphilharmonie.
We didn't know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. Even though we booked a tour in English despite it being in German, this was not a problem, although this situation wouldn't suit everyone. It was down to Henning's great musical skill and his inclusivity that made it a memorable experience.
I have done this pub crawl twice. The shots are very simple, expect to pay for your own drinks. But the night gets great as you travel from bar to bar with the same group of people that will be your friends by the end of the night! The bar selection is also very good.
