Travel by air to visit Tikal, the largest and most significant city from the Maya Classic Period. The 2-day tour from Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala explores the archaeological ruins of temples from the Mayan world, before heading to the pre-Columbian ceremonial center at Yaxhá.
You will discover Mayan ruins in the heart of the Guatemalan jungle, and see and hear jungle wildlife, such as howler monkeys, whose powerful howl indicates that they are keeping watch over their homes.
Day 1: Guatemala City – Tikal
4:30 AM Transfer from your hotel in Guatemala City to the airport. If you are leaving from Antigua Guatemala, the departure time will be at 3:40 AM.
6:30 AM Flight departure from Guatemala City to Flores, Petén.
7:45 AM Upon arrival, transfer to Tikal, one of the most important archaeological sites of the Mayan world. Built during the Maya Classic Period, Tikal means “Place of Voices,” and it was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Mayans.
Your guide will show you around the complex of temples and take you to the Central Acropolis. Visit the twin-pyramid of Group Q, built by Yax Nuun Ayiin II in 771 in order to mark the end of the 17th K'atun. Continue to Group R, dating back to 790, and then on to the Central Acropolis and Temples I, also known as the “Temple of Ah Cacao” or “Temple of the Great Jaguar.”
Visit the “Temple of the Mask” or Temple II, located on the main plaza and regarded as the first and one of the most important temples within the entire complex. End at the Lost World Pyramid, the largest structure in the Mundo Perdido complex.
1:00 PM Return to the Visitor Center for lunch. After lunch, you will have some free time to explore the park of Tikal on your own.
3:00 PM Transfer from the park to your selected hotel in Flores.
Day 2: Yaxhá – Guatemala City
Transfer to Yaxhá, a former ceremonial center and city of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Walk among more than 500 structures, and see evidence of Teotihuacan influence in the pyramid architecture and some 40 decorative stelae. Listen and look out for native wildlife as you stroll through dense jungle, and soak up the mystical surroundings of the spiritual center.
