What to Expect
Depart Guadalajara and head to the charming villages of Chapala and Ajijic on a half-day small group tour (maximum 13 people).
Located approximately 27 miles (45 kilometers) south of Guadalajara, Chapala sits on the banks of Lake Chapala and is renowned for its beauty. The lake has become a hotspot for North American retirees drawn to its incredible year-round weather. On arrival, take a scenic boat ride to Scorpion Island (Isla de los Alacranes) and discover a secluded island accessible only by boat.
Your guide will point out the many birds that inhabit the lake, including pelicans. Get a unique perspective from the middle of the island, where a few outdoor restaurants serve local specialties such as charales (tiny dried fish eaten with salt, lime and chili).
Then, head to Ajijic and immerse yourself in the romantic atmosphere of its galleries, quaint shops and colonial-style buildings. Get an overview of the history of the town and the importance of the lake to the region. Enjoy more lakeside views as you walk down cobblestone streets lined with charming restaurants, bars and art galleries full of local textiles.
