From Bole: Tiya, Adadi Mariam, & Melka Kunture Trip

After Breakfast at the Hotel we will drive to south of Addis Ababa and our first stop at Adadi Maryam Rock Hewn Church. The site is believed to have been built in the 12th century. Local tradition states that king Lalibela, one of the prominent kings of the Zagwe dynasty commissioned the construction of the church in the 12th century. According to the hagiography of St. Lalibela, Adadi Mariam was one of 76 rock-hewn churches which he had constructed and excavated in his lifetime, including those in Lasta. According to oral traditions, the establishment of Adadi Mariam church is also related to the coming of one of the most prominent saints of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, Abune Gebre Menfes Kidus, from Egypt to Ethiopia. Our second stop to Tiya, it’s an archaeological site in central Ethiopia. It is best known for its large stone pillars, many of which bear some form of decoration. The archaeological site was designated a World Heritage Site in 1980, due to the unique nature of these monolithic monuments. The site is relatively recent. It was dated to a time period between the 11th and 13th centuries. The site contains 36 monuments, including 32 carved stele covered with symbols. Our Third stop at Melka Kunture is a Paleolithic site in the upper Awash Valley, Ethiopia. The site became a World Heritage Site in 2024. The Melka Kunture area is made up of valleys whose inner terraces resisted erosion. Later we will have lunch with Ethiopian coffee. Finally drive back to Addis Ababa.

This excursion to the south of Addis Ababa is like a mini-visit to Ethiopia for those who are not going to other parts of the country. Our guide Dagin spoke very good English and gave us a complete introduction to the country. It is appreciated to go with a good 4x4 since not all the roads were paved. Nico was a great driver! The itinerary includes the last church built by King Lalibela, Adadi Mariam. It is a good opportunity to see the excavated churches of the 12th century. On Thursdays and Sundays there is also a market. The day of our visit was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and there were quite a few believers. Then we visit the site of the Tiya funerary stelae which is a World Heritage Site. Finally, the excavations of Melka Kunture are explained. We toured the museum and were able to see part of the site where objects and human remains from a million years ago have been found. The restaurant selection for lunch was excellent and allowed us to sample local spirits and good Ethiopian food.

It may seem a bit pricey (we took a private tour) at first, but it is worth every cent. The organisation is flawless, the safaris (as you get to try morning, day and evening tours, with different perspectives) are perfectly run and the Salt Lick lodge is uniquely "out of this world" with close encounters to the animals when they come to drink. What brought these two days beyond our expectations is the incredible service and knowledge of Benjamin. He went out of his way to get us the best spots possible, was very informative and offered assistance even for matters outside the safari (like booking train tickets, which can be challenging for tourists !). His skills gave us the opportunity to encounter almost all the game, including lions. Because nothing is perfect and there is always a path for improvement, I should mention that prices for the extra (namely drinks) in the lodge are prohibitive. Of course it's far from everywhere, but it is beyond reasonnable.

This was the best tour of our trip. Our guide Dagi was very nice and knowledgeable. The 4x4 was welcome as some roads were gravel tracks and could be quite bumpy. A very professional tour compared to the others we did. I highly recommend them.
