Your first stop will be at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, where you’ll find Mather Point, your first good look at the canyon. From there, proceed to Yavapai Point and the Yavapai Geology Museum, where you’ll get insider knowledge on the canyon’s complex geology and how these layers of rock help us see back in time millions of years. Next, head to Grand Canyon Village to optionally purchase snacks and souvenirs. Then, walk along the South Rim Trail. There’s a reason this trail is the most popular spot in the park: the views it offers are unbeatable. As you walk, dive into the peculiar construction of the Hopi House, the enigmatic architect who built it, and the heated feud between galleries along the rim. The next part of the tour takes place aboard the free Grand Canyon Shuttle. Get directions to the shuttle, then head down Hermit Road, which isn’t accessible to cars. Along the way, stop at some incredible vistas including Powell Point, Hopi Point, and The Abyss. Arrive at Hermit’s Rest, which features a hiking trail for the avid adventurer, then head back to explore the eastern half of the park. More great views await you at Pipe Creek Vista and the aptly named Grandview Point, which also features a lush hike below the canyon’s rim. Continue toward Moran Point and get acquainted with the Hopi and their traditions, as well as the Ancient Puebloans who preceded them. Finally, you’ll arrive at the impressive, medieval-looking Desert View Watchtower, offering more spectacular views and snacks to purchase. Natural wonder is unlike anything on earth. 2 Hopi House Modeled after the 1000 year old pueblo dwellings of the Hopi Village in Old Orabi. Hopi House was built by the Fred Harvey Company as a market for Native American crafts, made by artisans on the site. Bright Angel Lodge, Hermit’s Rest, Lookout Studio, Phantom Ranch, Desert View Watchtower, Colter Hall and Victor Hall, (the latter two being employee dormitories). At first glance, Kolb Studio appears to be just an old house perched on the rim of the canyon. However, if you step inside, or see it from Bright Angel Trail on your hike out of the canyon, you get the sense it is much more than that. This is the Victorian home of the Kolb Brothers who created a lasting legacy of adventure, exploration, family love, and amazing Grand jaw dropping view! For many visitors coming to the South Rim, Mather Point offers the first glimpse of a world wonder. A short walk from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and parking lots 1-4, Mather Point offers an expansive view of the canyon. On a clear day you can see 30+ miles (48 km) to the east and 60+ miles (96 km) to the west. Looking down into the canyon you can see a few small samples of the Colorado River, Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon, and numerous trails crisscrossing the landscape. Constructed in 1932, the Desert View Watchtower was designed by Mary Colter, who is often referred to as “The Architect of the Southwest.” Near the eastern edge of Grand Canyon National Park, where the Colorado River begins to turn north and the Painted Desert stretches toward the Navajo and Hopi Reservations, a 70-foot-tall circular stone structure perched on the South Rim draws visitors’ attention.
