  • From Belgrade: Danube River and Iron Gate Gorge Tour

    1. From Belgrade: Danube River and Iron Gate Gorge Tour

The tour starts with a 2-hour drive toward Eastern Serbia, enjoying the beautiful landscapes and listening to interesting stories about this part of the country. The first stop is Golubac fortress, a defensive complex which used to defend many kingdoms through centuries. Golubac is the perfect fairy-tale castle, wonderfully set off by its location in the rugged landscape at the head of Đerdap Gorge. There are nine towers in all, each between 20 and 25m high, and combined with the interesting position of the fortress leaning over the Danube. They make Golubac undoubtedly one of the most beautiful castles along the 2,850km Danube odyssey from source to the Black Sea. Proceed the adventure towards the widest flow Danube river has, the famous Iron Gate. Its sheer size leaves no one untouched as the Danube suddenly gives the impression of the sea. After around 30 minutes of driving, reach th...

It was a lovely day - Golubac is a majestic fortress against the Danube river. I would've loved to walk up the towers, but they were shut due to the rain. but the option would've existed otherwise. I liked the pace of the tour - wasn't rushed, and we had enough time to walk around, explore. Lunch was absolutely the best! Jovan is a really great guide - knowledgeable and friendly.

The trip started a bit late due to some delay from one of the group members. But the guide Jelena and the driver Bogdan more than made up for it. They were extremely pleasant, had great manners and ensured that there were no compromises on the tour. Jelena is a rockstar and is a perfect tour guide. Her ability to mix with people of different cultures makes her immensely likeable. The tour itself was excellent with the highlight been the speed boat ride at the Gorge. highly recommended!!!

We absolutely loved this tour. A lot of history for one day trip. You get the impression that the time does not exist. At certain point you don't know anymore who was here first:mammoths, lepenski vir civilisation,Serbs,Romans,Othomans etc. One thing is certain though, as our kind and very knowledgeable tour guide Milan said, we are the only ones that stayed and continue to exist in this malting pot of civilisations.

The guide (Jovan) was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make everyone on the tour feel welcome and comfortable. The restaurant chosen for this tour combines excellent selection of Serbian traditional dishes with a feel of home made food and amazing views of Danube gorge and Serbian country side. The tour is a nice combination of amazing historical sites and beautiful views, though I think it could be made even more memorable with addition of a couple of viewpoint stops to highlight the amazing views of the Djerdap gorge and Danube.

We have enjoyed our trip to Golubac Fortress, our guide Jovan was giving a lecture about the Serbian history on our way. From there to Lepenski Vir, The early settlement of ancient civilisation about 10000 years back, was verymuch intriguing. The lunch we had was delicious and was on having a lovely from hilltop view of Danube. Moreover we had an excellent climate, which made our trip a wonderful experience.
