The iconic Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco with Marin County to the north, and over two billion cars have driven across the suspension bridge since it's 1937 completion. But how else can you enjoy the bridge? Here are some tips.
Sail around the bay, under the bridge, and around Alcatraz Island. Not only that, but you can also keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, such as dolphins and pelicans!
Why not stop off at San Francisco's famous Alcatraz prison? Spend a day learning about its unusual history and location while you gaze at the city far away.
Get onto the viewing platform at this turn-of-the-20th-century military installation and enjoy the panorama.
Make an afternoon of sitting on the lovely shore, just off the Coastal Trail, and admire the bridge at sunset. Just be aware that the northern part of the beach is for nudists!
Want to take in the full scope of San Francisco's famous red structure? Then get on it! The only thing better than walking across the bridge has got to be crossing it by bike!
Northern California enjoys more temperate weather than its southern counterpart, but it'll still be quite warm. Check the forecast - you don't want your trip to be spoiled by rain!
If you're planning to view the Golden Gate Bridge from Alcatraz Island, please be aware that Alcatraz is a separate attraction and you'll need to buy a ticket for that in itself. Otherwise, all viewing spots are a matter of navigating public transportation!
Most of them take around an hour and a half, although you may need to get there 20-30 minutes before departure time to ensure your place.
Our bus commentator (not on every bus) was hilarious and informative. When we were on a bus without the live person, the recorded info was great to listen to as well. Doing the combo tour let us see alcatraz when tickets were sold out everywhere! Alcatraz was also a welcome surprise. So much cooler than anticipated. We listened to the audio and hopped back on the boat. Took about 1 hour. We were cramming our days so didn't have much more time to spend than that, but definitely worthwhile!
We had a rough start in the beginning trying to figure out how to use the GoCar, but San Francisco's drivers seemed rather patient with us as we were getting our bearings, so it felt very safe. The GPS guide was fun to follow too, and we learned a lot about San Francisco's landmarks along the way. My advice would be to go for the all-day package and start in the morning so you can have all day to spend time at all the sights for as long as you want and at your own pace.
I only had a half-day free for SF and really wanted to see the Forrest - this fit the bill although it is listed as a 3hr tour, then I got my confirmation it said 3.5hrs and in reality, it was more like 4.5 hrs so plan accordingly - The 9 am tour was perfect not too crowded and Muir Woods did not disappoint just breathtaking! Our tour guide was great and very informative - I would do it again if I was short on time! Also super safe for a woman traveling alone!
We had some complications with our travel arrangements when we arrived in San Francisco and we were unable to go on the bike ride. We went down to the bike store and explained our situation and Bay City Bikes were very accommodating and had no issues with rebooking our reservation for the next day. Thank you!
Very good value trip. Stay on the bus and go round on the full journey first so you get to understand the city layout, then hop on and off. Some stops really busy and traffic bad so impossible to time when you might get somewhere. We walked rather than wait a few times.
