Hike the mountains of Garrotxa on a 5-hour easy trek in the quiet wilderness of the Sant Aniol d'Aguja valley, river of Sant Aniol, and more. Immerse yourself in the broken earth tracks of a unique natural environment, once home to bandits and smugglers.
What to Expect
Discover the unique environment of Garrotxa and hike hidden paths where bandits and smugglers once took refuge. The landscape is formed of 40 volcanic cones and more than 20 lava flows, with a climate that gives way to a diversity of vegetation, from holm oaks to beautiful beech trees. Dotted with walking trails across valleys, it makes for a beautiful excursion from Girona.

You will walk the Sant Aniol d'Aguja valley to find a diversity of plant life, as well as the 11th-century Romanesque hermitage of Sant Aniol and 12th-century hermitage of Santa Cecilia Sadernes. Starting at the river in Sant Aniol, hike along the banks of the water to marvel at the natural pools formed along the way. Cross the river by bridge, or leap from stone to stone like a mountain gazelle.

Depart the chapel and surrounding meadows for Gorg Blau. Its pond of clear turquoise water and white stones is like something from a movie. A small waterfall flows from the top of the cliffs, providing an ideal site for a cooling dip in the summer.

End your hike at Brull, where an impressive 100-foot (30-meter) wall of water is popular with adventure canyoneers. On your return journey, you will pass the chapel of Santa Cecilia Sadernes with its small cemetery and Romanesque constructions, as well as a spectacular 14th-century Romanesque bridge over the Llierca River.
