7 must-see sites in Gdansk
Although much of it was destroyed by war, Gdansk has emerged as one of the most beautiful Baltic cities. Its history of changing between Prussian and Slavic rule has made way for a rich cultural experience for anyone who visits.
1. Long Market
This is the closest thing to a main square that Gdansk has and is distinguished by its tall, colorful Mannerist buildings.
2. Neptune Fountain
Located at the center of Long Market, this statue survived World War II. Rumor has it that it once flowed with Goldwasser, the local liqueur. Like the rest of Long Market, the statue has a rather Dutch influence - it was built by Flemish artist Peter Husen.
3. European Solidarity Center
The Solidarity movement, led by Lech Walesa, sought to bring down the Communist regime. Let this museum educate you about events that would change the face of Europe.
4. Shakespeare Theater
For a multilingual Shakespeare experience, visit this theater, which has occupied the same site in different forms since the 17th century.
5. Stutthof Concentration Camp
This was the first Nazi concentration camp built outside Germany. Respectfully reflect on the conditions and events of Stutthof on a guided visit to the grounds and the museum.
6. Polish Post Office Museum
The theory goes that the post office in Gdansk was a front for the Polish government's intelligence. The museum shows history of the 18th century - from German annexation in 1939, to its present-day use as a post office.
7. St. Mary's Church
One of Europe's largest buildings constructed in the Brick Gothic style, the unusual flat roof of its tower and the huge black organ against the white walls make it a very imposing church.
Planning Your Visit
Weather
Although you should bring summer clothing if you're visiting Gdansk in the summer months, the Baltic chill can be fierce - bring a jacket, especially if you go out in the evenings!
Toilets
In Poland, a circle on the toilet door indicates the ladies', and a downward-facing triangle means the gents'!
Twin cities
Gdynia, 30 minutes westwards, is one of Gdansk's twin cities. It offers a large naval base and a long seashore.
Kaliningrad
Although you're a couple of hours from Russia - Kaliningrad is a Russian exclave resting between Poland and Lithuania and you'll need a pre-approved visa to enter if you're not a citizen.

What people are saying about Gdansk
A really great activity! Totally unique experience and a truly excellent way to see the city from a completely different perspective, low down on the water with nothing but the sound of the water lapping alongside. A very peaceful and relaxing tour taking in all the highlights of the city, the historic dockyards at sunset, the stunning old town and even up the river and out into the tranquility of the upper river, complete with ancient ramparts. Our guide was excellent and knowledgable - providing just the right amount of information as we went along! Superb. Couldn’t recommend it enough! Thank you
Our guide Alex was obviously very proud of his city and country. It was a very interesting and entertaining gentle walking tour from start to finish. He told us about history, culture, religion and modern life, it was very relaxed and spontaneous. The city was looking beautiful and although our walk was only about 4.5 km we covered a lot of ground and got away from the main tourist areas down small streets and paths. Sausage tasting interesting ?!, donut tasting great followed by a delicious vodka!
Loved the tour! David is a fantastic tour guide, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the city. His English was also really good! The tour was great to get a solid understanding of the city’s history and its culture which was exactly what I was looking for. After the tour I was able to talk to Bozena who took the time to share some personal experiences and insider tipps. You can also rent the bikes (which are really good quality) for either hourly or day rates. Thank you!
We really enjoyed our walking tour with Alex. It was us and Alex so we had a private tour. He knows lots of interesting, historical and funny facts Gdansk and showed us lots of places, it is worth the money even before you have the snacks and drinks. He really knows Gdansk inside and out. We would recommend the tour to everyone. It is at a nice pace so you don't feel rushed.
Very happy with this tour! Guide was friendly and he explained very well the surrounding area, speaks good English which made it easy to hear. Also, I was given a can of watter and there are blankets in case you get cold. It may get cold out there so get dressed well! Tour lasted for about 2 hours I reckon. Highly recommended!
