Full description
Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned both the Villa Borghese itself and many of the great works still on display in its gallery. Works by Bernini, Caravaggio, and Titian remain in their original settings, as envisioned by the Cardinal, a fiercely determined collector. Strictly-controlled entry to the Villa and Gallery can make booking difficult and complicated. This package lets you avoid the organizing and even skip the line to get in when you arrive. During this fully-guided tour you’ll hear more about Cardinal Borghese’s quest to complete his collection, and the stories behind the artworks themselves, including Bernini’s "Apollo and Daphne", Canova’s "Pauline Bonaparte", Caravaggio’s "St. Jerome" and Raphael’s "The Deposition". Your guide will be an English-speaker and an expert on the collection, and audio headsets ensure you’ll hear every word they say. The tour also includes a visit to the Borghese Gardens: once the Cardinal’s private park, now a favorite spot for locals to relax among sculptures, plants, and water features, and get away from it all. From the Pincio Terrace you can appreciate another kind of work of art: the vista of Rome itself, from the Piazza del Popolo into the distance.

Great tour, the Borghese Gallery is definitely one of the best places to visit during your stay in Rome. Our guide (I think her name was Alessandra) was very professional in managing the group and navigating the gallery to avoid big crowds. She was very engaging and shared a lot of interesting information about both the artworks and their creators as well as the museum building itself. She was also on time so the tour started when it was supposed to (not the case with the other two tours I was on!). The audio was also very clear and she spoke good English.

Our tour guide is wonderful! She not only covered all the major sculptures and paintings in the museum but also did so with wonderful detail - one can tell that she had training in art history and can pinpoint exactly why a sculpture or a painting is famous and how to appreciate it. Definitely worth it!

Initially we had doubts whether this was worth it or not (my wife and I), because we did the Uffizi in Florence as well as a lot of historical tours in Italy overall. Eventually we ended up going, and I can assure you it's a must. This place has lot of work by Bernini and Caravaggio which to me made it worth visiting. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable (Ettore). After your visit spare some time for the park and they rent bikes over there.
