Furnas do Enxofre

Explore the beauties of Terceira Island, visiting mountains, hills, craters, volcanoes and caves. This tour is in the afternoon, and you are going to visit all the center of Terceira island (places where the public bus does not reach). Pick-up at your accommodation is at 14:00 p.m. The first place where you are going is to the top of the biggest crater of the island. From there you can see a beautiful green landscape composed of agricultural fields. From there we will go the interior of the island, where you'll visit Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave) a lava tube that formed as a cave. After that you will be amazed with the fumaroles field (Furnas do Enxofre), Algar do Carvão. It's the highlight of the tour, because it's an empty volcano you can go inside of, learning all about the formation of this natural wonder.

Pickup at the accommodation at 9h00-9h15, to explore the western of Terceira island: visit the fishing port in São Mateus town (artisanal fishing art), heading to west, photo stop at baía do negrito (fort and whaling exibition), taste artisanal cheese (4 types of cheese); walk around Lagoa das Patas lake (national park surrounded by hortênsias, azáleas, and camélias); spot 3 islands of the central group from Raminho viewpoint (São Jorge, Pico and Graciosa island). Back to the accommodation at 13h00.

In this tour, guided by a geologist, we will visit Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave) and Algar do Carvão. From here in the center of the island, depending on the weather you can choose to taste our famous local cheese while learning some of the region’s history or visit a local organic farm where coffee trees grow side-by-side with tropical fruits (banana, papaya, passion-fruit...). You will be able to meet the farm owners and learn from them while trying the locally produced coffee and other delicacies according to the season. If you'd like to take a dip in one of our natural pools along the way, bring a towel and a swimsuit. The experience is a fully customizable private tour custom-made according to your personal needs and wishes. The Caves are open on afternoon (2 - 6pm summer / 2:30 - 5:30pm winter). Between October and April close on Sundays, Mondays and Thursday.

Bring your swimsuit if you want to take a dip in one of the island’s famous natural swimming pools (weather permitting). And of course, we'll visit Gruta do Natal and Algar do Carvão. Discover the volcanos and volcanic caves of Terceira Island on this geology lover's guided tour. Visit Algar do Carvão, Furnas do Enxofre and Gruta do Natal with an expert guide. Meet your guide and driver for pick-up at your hotel and head to the first stop on the tour — the inactive Algar do Carvão. Visit it from the inside and discover its small lake and fascinating geological formations. Next head to Furnas do Enxofre, a small strip of land with 20 fumaroles expelling white vapor into the air. You'll also see native flora like the Azores juniper and the Azores blueberry. Top off your tour with a visit to Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave), a system of caves known as a lava tube, full of spectacular volcanic formations.

The Tour starts by the Afternoon where you´ll be Picked up from your hotel and then you´ll go to the center of Terceira Island. On this tour you´re going to see a lot of secret spots known by the locals. You´ll visit an inside of a Lava Tube with 700m of extention. The Tour ends at Algar do Carvão, wich is Vulcano that you can actualy visit the inside.

In the first day of this excursion you'll be invited to do the hiking trail of Mistérios Negros (moderate/hard level trail, not straight), located in the interior of the island, lasting 3h, where you'll walk trough volcanic rock and a breathtaking forest of cryptomeria trees. Lunch will be included in a local restaurant and afterwards you'll have the chance to visit several natural monuments such as Gruta do Natal (a set of lava tunnels), Furnas do Enxofre (fumarolic field) and Algar do Carvão (an empty volcano). The entry tickets are included. On the second day, you will do the hiking trail of Baías da Agualva (easy level trail, linear), a trail by the north coast where you're surrounded by beautiful green fields and the sea, lasting 2h30, after we'll visit the Parque das Frechas, a natural park where you have a waterfall, lunch will be included as a picnic, and in the afternoon you will see one of the most amazing panoramic views of the island on Serra do Cume top, from where you can see one of the biggest craters of the Azores. On the third and final day of this three day excursion, you'll be able to walk through Rocha do Chambre (moderate/medium difficulty level trail) , a hiking trail which lasts for 3h, located in the interior/northern region where you'll be able to see lovely views of the hills, endemic vegetation and volcanic landscape, after you will have lunch in a local restaurant and in the afternoon visit the town of Biscoitos where you can see the famous vineyards planted on volcanic soil and the natural pools composed of volcanic rock.

On this full day in adventure, we start with the pickup from the client to the accommodation and end with the drop-off on it. A day full of emotions guaranteed by our local guide and by visiting the places that most identify our island, whether at the level of culture and history, but also at the level of unique nature. A incredible panoramic view of the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Monte Brasil is an extinct volcano that emerged from the sea to join the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Today, it is a protected landscape and the city’s natural park. After by the famous Vaquinha cheese, the oldest cheese on our island (cheese tasting included). The remaining points pass through the beautiful lagoon of Falca, Forest Reserve is in the interior of Terceira Island and gets its name from a beautiful artificial lake, fed by the water flowing from the Serra de Santa Bárbara range, by Furnas do Enxofre, Biscoitos Natural lava Rock Pools (where you can dive) and Serra do Cume, with a spectacular view of the so-called Patchwork, the division of agricultural fields in Caldeira dos 5 Picos! At its highest point, the Serra do Cume rises to 545 meters high.
