Full description

Hike along the levadas, or mini-canals, on a guided trek from Funchal. Choose between a private and group tour, hike up the oldest mountain on the western side of the island, and walk past cascading waterfalls.

Begin your adventure with a hotel pickup in Funchal. Head to the Levada do Risco and start your 10-kilometer trek. Hike along the levada (mini-canal) through looming forests filled with tweeting birds and mysterious trees. Continue past rock pools carved over millions of years by running water and stop to enjoy the roaring waterfalls. In the summer, stop to swim in the Lagoa Dona Beha, a refreshing mountain lake ringed by waterfalls. Continue up a mountain in the Antigo bardo Currais das Esquías hiking area before looping back to your starting point.

Walk with lovely views and waterfalls and varying vegetation. Sara was a great and helpful guide. This walk is called "moderate" but compared to other walks with this classification (Levada do Rei for example) this one was much harder with long stretches of up and downhill. This walk ends (or starts, depending on the direction the guide takes) with a long walk on a road. Maybe 2 km. This makes it a 4 star rather than a 5 star.

We had a super great day with Sara our guide. We had not yet arrived at the starting point when the car that transported us broke down. Sara and Nelli, our great drivers, immediately provided a replacement and we were able to continue within 20 minutes. The organization of the whole tour was excellent. SARA told us all about the levadas, flora and fauna. It was very informative. We would gladly book a tour with Sara again at any time. MONI AND ANNETTE

Had a lovely trip & what made the trip amazing was the knowledge of the guide Sara. Lovely lady inside and out. I would say it’s a moderate walk & Sara always made sure everyone in our group was okay. Nice little stops before & after for toilet stops & drink if you wish. The views are amazing worth doing this trip
