I purchased the hop on hop off ticket on line prior to arrival in Funchal.. we then exchanged the voucher for our ticket and away we went! It was fabulous, and we got to see a lot more of Madeira than just Funchal as a result. We took the bus to Camara De Lobos, and Cape Girao, the highest sea cliff. It was simple and the buses were excellent. The audio guide onboard gave some useful facts as well.

Absolutely recommendable to get to know the city in general, but the yellow tour is enough. For everything else, I would recommend booking the tours to the west and east of the island. Are all-day tours that are worthwhile if you want to avoid your own rental car. - And that would be good, because you should first explore the road conditions on Madeira.

We were able to use the bus three days running by validating the ticket at 12.49. We also didn't have to stick to the days we had booked for. The buses ran every 30 or 35 minutes but often stretched over those times leaving us at the bus stop for over half an hour on two occasions, but the routes were quite comprehensive.
