Full description

Explore the Rabaçal Valley on a guided walking tour from Funchal. Hike along the levada trail that descends from the plateau of Paul da Serra and admire the 25 natural spring cascades of the Levada das 25 Fontes. Start with pickup from your hotel in Funchal and travel to the start of the trail. Join your guide and follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the route. Afterward, relax on the return journey to Funchal, with drop-off back at your accommodation.

Amazing walk and activity overall. I did this after being slightly disappointed with the Pico do Arieiro hike getting cancelled due to the weather and I was happy with it. This walk is long with some steps but very doable. Also our guide-Leona was amazing. She has tons of knowledge about the area, flora, and history of the levadas. Overall very happy with the walk. Also comfortable drive to the spot and back to the city. Stopped at a cafe in the morning and on the way back as well for Toilet use, Quick snack, and there was also a supermarket to buy snacks for later. Definitely recommend this!

We selected this option because we were under the impression that we would be picked up at our accommodation (others in our group also had the same impression), instead we were sent to a random location without signage. Thankfully there was a group of us and we managed to just guess around the area we should wait at. The van driver was good. The tour itself felt very rushed. The guide would reiterate a few times that we needed to stick together as a group, watch out heads, watch where we were going, and stop to take pictures to avoid injury. We stopped at a few lookout points otherwise the guide would just keep walking without letting us take pictures. If you are looking for a walk, without any time to appreciate the beauty, this would be a good experience for you. If you want to enjoy and have an experience with beautiful scenery, just pay for a bus where you can walk at your own pace. The only part I felt needed a guide was the tunnel but you could just watch a YouTube video and go.

In our opinion, it was a useful choice to use a guide, because he led us along the trails in the right directions so that we didn't have to climb up several times. We walked probably three levada trails: PR6., PR 6.1 and PR 6.6, saw waterfalls, went through a tunnel. We definitely recommend this tour!
