    Depart Funchal and journey to the Pico dos Barcelos to experience one of Madeira's unique viewpoints. Get a breathtaking view of all points of the island, before making your way up to Eira do Serrado.

    Admire the surrounding chestnut trees and eucalyptus plants of the natural wonderland. The ancient footpaths are still used by locals and tourists, and the narrow road and tunnels can still be seen. 

    From an altitude of 1,094 meters above sea level, see across to the Nuns Valley. Isolated from the rest of the island, the Nuns Valley is surrounded by lava rock and takes its name from the nuns that once inhabited the valley as they fled from pirate attacks during the 16th century.

    Try some traditional chestnut cake and pastries only found in the region, along with different traditional liquors. Then, go to Monte, one of Madeira´s old tourist stops, and visit the church where the tomb of the Emperor Charles I of Austria can be found. 

    Add a little adventure to the day and enjoy an unforgettable 2-kilometer toboggan ride down the old road of Livramento, where the bus will pick you up at the bottom.

    The whole tour was great! Starting with the driver, who gave a lot of information in German and English, to the Nonnental with an impressive view of the valley. We were the first on the wicker sleds...so there wasn't a long queue and the 2km long ride was very nice. We also had plenty of time at the various photo stops. The liqueur tasting in Nonnental was also delicious and we took some with us.

    Nice friendly guide who speaks several languages. Also willing to take pictures. Furthermore, you get what this tour has to offer. A ride to monte, then down with the sled. On the way they take pictures of you which you can buy at the end for 10eu. Then continue to 2 viewpoints after which you end up in the valley. Plenty of time to look around, before taking the scenic route back to funchal. Guide is willing to drop you off along the way, if you wish.

    Arrived the day before yesterday in Madeira, this first half-day excursion gives a first impression of the island from Funchal to Curral d'as Freiras via Monte and its toboggan of wicker sleds, a winding road in the forest towards the belvedere of the Valley of the Nuns. The guide Lucia was able to give us the essential comments in several languages. The descent in a wicker toboggan was also an original experience. Excursion to recommend before moving on to the western and eastern tours!
