This was an amazing day, unfortunately we did not get to see the top of Mt. Fuji because of the weather as it was raining but that’s uncontrollable. But the boat ride, cable car and volcano was still amazing without the view. The highlight of the day was the 2hr onsen (or shopping) highly recommend going to the onsen! Was only 1600yen per person for the public onsen that was in an up market hotel, they also have private baths with views if you don’t want to be naked in front of others but I recommend going to the public (gender split) for the full experience. We were so comfortable and the place was spotless. They have inside and outside baths with panoramic views of Mt. Fuji with different temperatures and water types (sulphuric/carbonic/plain) as well as a cold plunge pool and a large sauna. The change rooms had completely body/face products and towels as well as hairdryers and straighteners. And of course a big thank-you to our travel guide Rainbow who made the day smooth and easy.

Full description

Depart from Shinjuku in Tokyo to the scenic areas of Hakone near Mount Fuji. First, cruise on a well-decorated pirate boat to enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji around the green on Lake Ashinoko. After viewing the mountain from the water, view it in the air by taking the Hakone Ropeway up to Mount Hakone, where you can see a clear view of Mount Fuji from another mountain.  The Ohwakudani, Great Boiling Valley, is another famous volcano, which erupted 4,000 years ago with live white sulfur escaping. Try the local Black Boiled Egg, Kuro Tamago, to see whether the legend is true and that it extends your life for seven years. In the afternoon choose to visit Gotemba Premium Outlets for around 2 hours. Gotemba premium outlet is one of the largest outlets in Japan, you can see Mount Fuji from inside the outlet.  The other choice is to experience the famous hot spring from which you can enjoy a view of Mount Fuji view. Hot springs are one of the most famous cultures of Japan and many tourists like to experience it when they visit. Return to Shinjuku by 6:00 PM.

The pirate ship ride was short, and felt more like a ferry than an experience in itself. The cruise around Saikai National Park Kujukushima (also a “pirate” ship) is better. The Gondola ride was the same, and more of a form of transport than an experience. The windows were so heavily tinted and scratched that you couldn’t take decent photos. The view wasn’t overly spectacular either, given that you spent most of the time at the treeline. The volcanic region was interesting, but you couldn’t get very close. Unzen Jigoku (near Nagasaki) was better. Felt more like several tourist shops gathered around a peak with a view of some vents. I didn’t partake in consuming a black egg due to health concerns. We were then taken to a luxury retail outlet on the way back for two hours. The driver and guide were professional, but there was nothing really in the way of commentary. Spent most of the day traveling on the bus (4 hours), or waiting for the bus (2 hours).
