This is essentially a bus ride to the Gibraltar border. But that is the only realistic way to visit. The "guide" was only with group for a short time as the bus approached the border. But very nice guy and gave us helpful information. The local taxi-van service is the only way to go to see the Rock. It sounds expensive but once you separate the included admissions, it's good. But don't even consider walking up OR down! The roads are very narrow, steep and winding. We saw people with kids plastering themselves against the rocks as the white vans zipped by. There was a huge cruise ship in port on our day so the taxis were not available at the border. Instead we walked to Main Street and had no trouble. But getting one right away and then dropping downtown after the tour is likely better. Overall a great day - make sure you leave enough time to cross the airport runway. We waited about 15 minutes while a military plane took off and the a BA landed.

Day was great. This trip included the bus to Gibraltar border and back. Our guide Marina told us a little bit of Gibraltar’s history. When we arrived to the border, she told us all the options to go see the rock etc. This trip doesn’t include any entrance tickets. The options are to buy a taxi tour (50€/per person) or you can take a bus or walk to the cable car and get cable car ticket (can be bought in advance. The price is about the same if you wish to visit caves etc. We took to taxi tour (1-1,5 hours). Next time probably cable car is enough if you just want to see the apes. But this was a good trip!
