Colonized by the Portuguese in 1726, Fortaleza has grown to become the fifth largest city in Brazil, hosting a variety of cultural, historical, and recreational attractions to be enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. You will discover both the old and the new sides to the city, with sights including the diverse historical architecture around the Central Market and Martyr's Square, the Castelo Branco Mausoleum, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Statue of Iracema, the Dragon of the Sea Art and Cultural Center, as well as a series of remarkable beach sites and craft fairs.
From Fortaleza you will drive along the scenic Sol Puente Route to Cumbuco Beach, renowned for its paradisical shorelines, and the variety of beach activities, from fishing and swimming, to rafting, dune buggy rides, and the local sport of ski-bunda – sledding down the huge sand dunes into the waters of Parnamirim pond below!
