The guided tour of San Giovanni Rotondo will take you to visit the places where the remains of Saint Pio from Pietralcina resided, which lived here for about 50 years. The tour itinerary will unite the most significant places, the ancient church, the new church, the monastery, and the new sanctuary. The ancient church, of the mid-1500s, has a very simple façade and inside it is composed of a single baroque style nave. At a second entrance to the convent, is the cell of Padre Pio and the crypt where the body of Padre Pio was housed it was transferred to the nearby sanctuary. The visit continues with the new church, built to accommodate in an appropriate manner the considerable flow of thousands of pilgrims that flowed ever more numerous to San Giovanni Rotondo. Here, the friar celebrated mass and confessed the faithful. After having seen the various utensils that belonged to the friar of Pietralcina inside the convent, head to the cell where the friar lived.  Your tour ends at the Sanctuary, designed by architect Renzo Piano. This is one of the largest churches in Italy, capable of holding up to 7,000 people. You will first visit the upper church, characterized by stone arches and decorations made by some of the best artists of national renown such as Arnaldo Pomodoro. Then through a helical walkway, visit the lower church and the crypt where the remains of Saint Pio rest.

Starting from the port of Vieste it will be possible to admire the islet of S. Eufemia, the peninsula of San Francesco, the monolith of Pizzomunno (it owes its name to the legend of the fisherman Pizzommunno and his beloved mermaid Cristalda), the Scialara beach, the of Portonuovo (with fine sand and shallow seabed), the Arco di San Felice (where the entrance to the small Campana cave is visible), Testa del Gargano. Along the crossing you can admire high white cliffs overlooking the sea with brooms, rockroses and pines that jut out over the blue waters and the suggestive beaches such as the bay of San Felice in sand, the bay of Campi, the bay of Porto Greco, the bay of Pugnochiuso, cala della Pergola, bay of Vignanotica and bay of Zagare in gravel. A splendid opportunity to experience the clear sea of the Gargano and/or for a trip along the south coast where you can admire the beautiful bays and the marvelous sea caves with a swim stop.

These incredible culinary stories will be told outdoors at the Merinum Cellars, located inside the Padre Pio Estate. A very suggestive location, immersed among centuries-old olive trees. The tasting will take place outdoors, barring rain, where we will use our internal tasting room, we will taste three different types of wine, and extra virgin olive oil, accompanying them with delicious typical products and dishes (salami, cheeses and bruschetta from the Gargano, Chef's fantasies). Afterwards, we will visit the Cellar and my wave-shaped vineyard, where you will complete your training, letting you personally know the native vines of this land, which I guarantee will remain in your heart. During this sensory experience, you will be moved and you will learn the basics of how to appreciate and taste a wine. I will be happy to answer your questions, if you need a transfer service to take you to our facility or simply if you need a room or a restaurant. This 3-hour evening excursion begins in Foggia at a wine shop where you’ll be introduced to Uva Rara, one of the most famous Apulian red wines, in a tasting guided by an expert sommelier. Continuing on, you’ll be delighted by the premium wines, olive oil, cheeses, and fine cured meats as you discover the hidden historic and architectural treasures of the Monti Dauni hills. Your English-speaking gourmet guide will accompany you throughout the evening. After your wine and product tasting you’ll head to the historic city center of Foggia to visit its famous cathedral by yourself. You’ll have free time to explore the city by night at your leisure.

San Giovanni Rotondo is famous all over the world as the city of St. Pio (known as Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, where he has lived the last moments of his life, and as the city where the venerated monk worked his miracles. Pio was beatified in 2002.In the Capuchin Monastery Padre Pio received the stigmata in 1918, and there where all those supernatural events that led to his sainthood and canonization took place as well. Visiting this Monastery and viewing the chambers where St. Pio conducted his life means jumping into a context of spirituality and mysticism; it is a destination that the devout and tourists alike should make every effort to visit.

The “Road of Pilgrims” that runs to the Arcangelo Michele Grotto in San Giovanni Rotondo (Apulia) was created in the late 1800s. San Giovanni Rotondo is now famous all over the world as the native city of St. Pio (meaning Pius, and known in Italian as Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, and as the city where the venerated monk worked his miracles. Pio was beatified in 2002, and it was he who founded the Sanctuary adjacent to the ancient Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Next to the Convent a second, larger Sanctuary (designed by noted architect Renzo Piano) was inaugurated on July 1, 2004.
