Admire the 5.17-meter marble statue representing the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in Florentine art. The statue soon came to symbolize the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family.    In the adjacent rooms, which were part of two former convents, important works of art are collected here from the Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts and from suppressed convents.  Recently the Gallery has been further enriched by the important collection of old musical instruments from the Cherubini Conservatory, the Department of Musical Instruments.

This activity provides tickets to enter the Accadaemia at a specific timeslot and does not provide a guide. That said the entry to the museum is exceptionally well organised - collect your tickets as instructed and then join your short queue at the alloted time. Once inside you can take an audio guide (€5) and listen to the commentary around the works of art as you pass. Some absolutely breathtaking pictures and sculptures. David is clearly a masterpiece, but there is so much more to see. Make sure you check out the Musical Intsrument collection.

it's one thing to exchange your ticket and then have to stand in line again for half an hour because the gallery is running behind. Florence is so crazy right now you can't even get a cab so always hoofing it somewhere which is tough on seniors. Be prepared for this no matter your activity. No such thing as skip the line!

We did a self guided tour and it was great! Michelangelo’s David left us totally mesmerized- the beauty of his work cannot be described. The marble unfinished sculptures of the prisoners leading up to David gave us a sense of the process involved. No one should miss seeing the original Michelangelo’s David in Florence!
