The exterior view of the Cupola is a showstopper, but the only way to see the inside of the dome up close and enjoy the extraordinary view of Florence is to climb its 463 steps. Discover how the Cupola was designed and built by Brunelleschi in 1418. Find out why the corridors are so narrow and admire Giorgio Vasari's frescoes of the Last Judgment (1572-9) on your way up. Look down and on the base, just above the drum, see the balcony started, but never finished, in 1507. Hear about the fascinating story of the balcony and the unfinished eighth side from your guide. Once you climb to the top of the Cupola, you will be enchanted by the panoramic view of Florence in front of your eyes. The cupola climb tour was definitely a highlight of our trip! The meeting spot was easy to find, we didn't have to wait long to enter, and our guide shared much of the history of the church/dome. The Duomo staff; however, kept hurrying us along, leaving us feeling a little rushed. Our tour provider, on the other hand, was extremely accommodating. Our tour was originally scheduled for 3:00, and we were not permitted to access the other areas of the complex until after the tour. Our start time then got moved to 3:45. Since this was our last day in Florence, I was concerned that we wouldn't have time to see everything if we had to wait until after our climb. The tour provider offered to give us our tickets early so that we could visit the other areas (cathedral, baptistery, crypt, bell tower) and then meet back at 3:45 for our climb. This allowed us to see everything that morning except the crypt (we still ran out of time) and then do the climb in the afternoon.

Excellent tour and our local guide Hilary was really good, well worth a visit. The only negative was that you have to store your bag in lockers in a separate building which is fine but the guy at the meeting point did not tell my husband to take the ticket with him so he was nearly turned away from being able to do so which my husband would not have been happy about but fortunately they still allowed him to check in our rucksack, would just have been helpful to have said this would be required!

It was really hard to understand our tour guide. Mainly, because the microphone needs to be much closer to their mouth. Like, it needs to be basically touching their mouth. And they had a heavy Italian accent. I missed about 50% of what they were saying. I still rate this as "good" because the overall experience of climbing the cupola, and the incredible view, both inside and outside, made it a good time. This is a strenuous climb, in a tight space, so just be mindful of that. We also did all the other experiences (Bell Tower, Baptistry, Crypt, Museum) included in the ticket. These don't have tours, but you can "skip the line" with them. Very worth doing. The Cathedral is free. Note that the Bell Tower was actually a harder climb, steeper. And only one way to get up and down. So a tight squeeze when having to pass people.
