On this tour, discover the Castello Estense in Ferrara, Europe's only preserved moated palace in a city center. Experience this symbol of power and the residence of the family and the duchess Lucrezia Borgia.
What to Expect
Since 1385, the Castello Estene built by military engineer Bartolino da Novara has been the icon of Ferrara and a symbol of an exercise in power. It stood first as a fortified castle and the House of Este and today is the government seat of the province.

The palace is an incredible fortress, whose moat remains filled to this day, and many of the treasures of art collected during the time of its building are today in some of the most prestigious collections and museums in the world. It stands as a monument to bygone days, with its many ceiling frescoes in the incredible ballroom of the main palace.

The walking tour takes places on three levels of the palace: the ground floor (Piano Terra), the main floor (Piano Nobile) and the basement (Piano Interrato). The rooms are masterpieces of art and design, revealing their original functions.

In the basement, visit the dungeons, immortalized in works by poets, musicians and artists like Lope de Vega, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, G. G. Byron, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Gaetano Donizetti and Giorgio de Chirico.

After a stay in the Orangery and the hanging gardens, pervaded by an incredible aroma of orange blossoms in spring, visit the main palace and its halls rebuilt in highest style after an earthquake in 1570: Sala dell'Aurora, Saletta dei Giochi and Sala dei Giochi. A small house chapel reminds visitors of the beauty of Ercole II and his consort Renée, daughter of the French King Ludwig XII.

See the frescoes of Sebastiano Filippi and his assistants here, then continue to further halls, where the walls hold works from the 16th to 20th centuries. Take special note of the Stanza dei Baccanali and the Stanza dei Paesaggi with the landscape paintings by Giuseppe Zola.

The walking tour concludes in the Salone degli Stemmi, where the ceiling is decorated with the coats of arms of top-ranking officials. A walk over a spiral staircase returns you to the interior of the palace and here the tour comes to an end.
