What You'll Do
  • Explore the wetlands of Castro Marim, one of the best birding sites in Portugal
  • See rare species of aquatic birds
Join us on a bird watching excursion to the marshlands of Castro Marim in Portugal’s Algarve. Our experienced ornithologists will guide you through this nature preserve, which is home to nearly 200 species of aquatic birds.
What to Expect
Your bird watching tour will be guided by ornithologists who are knowledgeable of all the bird species native to Castro Marim. With your guides you’ll explore this vast wetland area of the Algarve and its salt marshes to discover the beauty of the nearly 200 species that are known to live here.

Castro Marim provides shelter to a community of aquatic birds, some of which are considered rare or vulnerable species. The saltpans are the breeding habitat for the Black-winged Stilt, which is the symbol of this nature reserve. The Avocet, the Kentish Plover and Little Tern also breed here. Although the White Stork, Flamingo and Spoonbill are abundant there is no record of their breeding in the area.

We may also observe the Lesser Short-toed Lark at Castro Marim. This is the only site in Portugal where this species is known to breed. Other rare species such as the Squacco Heron, the Western Reef Heron and the Slender-billed Gull have also been seen in the area.

This bird watching tour is suitable for enthusiasts of all ages and at all levels of birding experience.
