9 essential Krakow travel tips from a local

Uncover the unique travel tips for Krakow that only locals know — from the best food to the best festivals.

Krakow is the most visited city in Poland with something to offer every budget and taste.
I love its stunning architecture and fascinating history. Although many people come to explore Krakow’s World War II sites, the city has a growing street food scene and exciting energetic vibe, too.

I recommend planning a four-day trip to properly explore its main attractions and make the most of these Krakow travel tips. From the largest medieval square in Europe to unique museums, castles, and some amazing natural beauty spots, it’s easy to fall in love with Krakow, as I did.

If you want all the major attractions on your doorstep, the best place to stay in Krakow is in the Old Town.

Stay in the Old Town if you’re short on time

To maximize your sightseeing time in Krakow, look for accommodation near the Main Market Square. Staying in the Old Town puts you at the heart of the action and within walking distance of St Mary’s Basilica, Wawel Castle, and more. If you’re looking for after-hours entertainment, Kazimierz (the former Jewish quarter) is the neighborhood to know for Krakow’s best nightlife.

Download the Jakdojade app before you go

The city’s integrated bus and tram system is very efficient and will get you to all of the major attractions. To travel like a local in Krakow, download the app Jakdojade to help plan your routes and buy tickets in advance. You can also use the ticket machines at bus stops or onboard. Just don’t forget to validate your ticket and keep it safe in case the inspector passes.

Time your trip to tie in with the Dragon Parade

Krakow’s Dragon Parade, which happens in early June, is one of the highlights of its events calendar. It celebrates the symbol of Krakow, the Wawel Dragon, and is one of the country’s most colorful open-air events. Expect a magical (and often crowded) fireworks display over the Vistula River. The Pierogi Festival in August is another favorite and celebrates Poland’s famous dumplings over several days.

Experience September’s golden appeal

If you’re not a fan of crowds or queues, avoid the peak summer season when the city is at its busiest. The best time to visit Krakow is April, May, September or October when the weather is still very mild but the city is transformed with spring blooms and fall foliage. Fall is a particular favorite as Krakow’s leaves turn perfectly golden.

Book in advance for the Wieliczka Salt Mine

Krakow’s most unique experiences are also the most in-demand. If you’d like to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine or Auschwitz during your stay in the city, book your tickets well in advance. If you miss out, St. Joseph’s Church, Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, and Zakrzówek are some of the lesser-known, non-touristy things to do in Krakow instead.

For the best zapiekanka in Krakow, head to Plac Nowy in Kazimierz.

Try the best zapiekanka in Krakow

When in Krakow, don’t miss the chance to try the best zapiekanka in the city. The popular Polish street food consists of a baguette cut in half and filled with a variety of toppings — the most traditional being cheese, mushrooms, and ketchup. Look for the windows in Plac Nowy, also known as the New Square, in the Kazimierz district to grab yours. I personally recommend the ones from Endzior.

To avoid any fines, cross the road in Krakow when you're told to.

Don’t get caught jaywalking

Always cross the streets of Krakow at the designated crosswalks and wait for the pedestrian light to turn green before proceeding — even if no cars are coming. If you don’t, you could receive a fine. Drinking alcohol in public is also prohibited in Poland, so keep it in mind when making any outdoor plans.

Don’t drive in the city centre

If you only plan to visit Krakow’s most popular landmarks, renting a car is unnecessary. Parking can be difficult and expensive, there’s often heavy traffic, and you can’t drive down every street in the Old Town, so it can get confusing. If you want to get behind the wheel, escape the city for a day or two with a road trip to Zakopane. At the base of the Tatra Mountains, it’s the winter capital of Poland but has walking trails I enjoy all year round.

Prepare for every season

The weather in Krakow can be unpredictable, so you’ll need good layers. Even in the summer in Krakow, it can get cool at night. Winter can be very cold and even snowy on some days, so thermal clothing, a good waterproof coat and shoes are essential. To pick up some quality cold-weather gear while you’re in the city, 4F is one of my favorite local stores.
