Cycle the gentle roads of the Valverde region of Évora in the Alentejo and discover the largest complex of megalithic menhirs and cromlech on the Iberian peninsula. Visit the Roman ruins of Tourega and climb to the castle of Giraldo.
What to Expect
Experience some of the most emblematic monuments of the Évora region of the Alentejo on a 4-hour cycling tour. Cycling along gentle rolling roads, you will visit the cromlechs of Almendres and the Roman ruins of Tourega.
Departing from Guadalupe, cycle through the leafy area of Valverde to the Cromlech of the Almendres. Dating back more than 5,000 years, the curious stone circles are the largest existing group of structured menhirs in the Iberian Peninsula, and one of the largest in Europe.
Continue to the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, just north of the historical Convent of Bom Jesus of Valverde. Research has put the dolmen structure at around 4,000-3,000 BC, and archaeological excavations have unearthed necklaces, copper objects, slate tablets, ceramics, and bowls.
You will also visit the roman ruins of Tourega, with the option of climbing the steep trail to the Castle of Giraldo for panoramic views of the Valverde. Under the shade of a tree, climb off your bikes to enjoy a picnic of local cheese and chorizo, accompanied by a good glass of Alentejo wine!
