Krakow: The Ethnographic Museum ticket

Krakow: The Ethnographic Museum ticket

Discover Krakow's Ethnographic Museum. The Town Hall section features an exhibition which highlights Polish folk culture, while the museum's second building, the so-called Esterka's House, contains temporary displays in its beautifully-vaulted cellar. Derived from a small collection gathered by Seweryn Udziela, the current exhibitions consist of around 80,000 showpieces, the majority of which are from the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century. A certain haven for the peasant culture of Krakow, the Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum invites all visitors to have a look around its precious and extensive collections. These exhibits shed light on the artists' attraction to the liveliness of folklore, which they saw as an antidote to the stagnation and cultural crisis among Polish intelligentsia from the turn of the 20th century.

City Tour Cracow , Jewish Quarter

City Tour Cracow , Jewish Quarter

Before World War II, Krakow had over 64,000 Jews (a quarter of the city's population). The religious life of Krakow's Jews was also concentrated in Kazimierz. They prayed in six large Orthodox synagogues (Old, Remu, Wysoka, Isaac, Popper and Kup) and in the Progressive synagogue (Tempel). They were maintained by the Jewish community, but there were also many prayer houses belonging to various religious associations and private individuals. Nowadays, Kazimierz is one of the most recognizable places in Krakow. This district, teeming with cultural and artistic life, attracts especially those who want to feel the spirit of Krakow's bohemia. The most crowded cafes and well-known art studios and galleries are concentrated around the following streets: Szeroka, Izaaka, Miodowa, Józefa, Podbrzezie and around Plac Nowy. However, it is difficult to make a complete list of pubs, cafes and restaurants that are worth visiting, because each of these places has a unique character and decor, and there are dozens of them in Krakow's Kazimierz.

Krakow: Entry Ticket to the Ethnographic Museum

In this place, at the corner of Krakowska and Trynitarska Streets, there was a Gothic tenement house, built in the 14th century. The basements have been destroyed since then. Later times (15th and 16th centuries) are remembered from parts of the walls for the aftermath, as well as for events related to the remains of stonework dating from around 1430. The common name, "Esterka's House", is related to the legend of Casimir the Great's love for Esther's Jews, and the house was supposed to be the place of their secret trysts. In the 16th century, the architect of the tenement house was Bartolommeo Berrecci, an Italian architect and sculptor of the early Renaissance, critical of the station of the Polish king Sigismund I the Old. (He was granted the citizenship of Krakow, he was even a city councilor and owned several tenement houses in the city. He rests in the nearby Corpus Christi church.) Berrecci in turn gave the characteristic tenement house to his daughter Anna, who in 1543 sold it to Stanisław Fox, a lay judge of Kazimierz. The house was renovated and rebuilt in the 19th century, and in the years 1978–1985 it was thoroughly renovated, while the details of the stonework, the frames of the basement windows and the plinth made of sandstone cladding were reconstructed. The source stonework dates back to the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. As a result of this renovation of the tenement house, the forms from the reconstruction carried out in the 19th century were restored. In 1987, the building was handed over to the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow. Currently, it is a place of temporary exhibitions, educational items, also located in the scientific part, including the specialized Museum Library, and in the office. This mini tour was fab. I initially booked it as my mam struggles to walk but I'd 100% book it again just for the experience. Our driver natalia was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. This tour covers a lot of the Jewish area and gives lots of history on life throughout the war.

Martina was an awesome guide who showed us around. She explained where we were going and gave us more oral information than what was included in the audio guide and she also showed us historic pictures. Recommend a tour!
