Fantastic tour. Henrique is a brilliant guide. Setting the scene with an overview of the history in Europe at that time before focusing on the Napoleonic War and specifically the Peninsula War. His knowledge of the Lines of Torres Vedras was excellent. He also was able to provide general information on Portugal and its history and culture. I highly recommend Henrique and this tour.
The private tour of Wellington's Defensive Lines is an amazing experience for anyone with a keen interest in military history, the Napoleonic Wars, or the strategic genius of the Duke of Wellington. We visited the Lines of Torres Vedras, a defensive system that played a critical role in repelling Napoleon’s forces and protecting Lisbon during the Peninsular War. Our guide, Henrique, was excellent. His understanding of the historical context and attention to detail made the tour so rewarding. He conveyed the significance of the Lines of Torres Vedras—constructed under Wellington’s personal direction during his year in Torres Vedras. He took us to key sites along the defensive lines, taking in not only the history but also the stunning views of the Portuguese countryside. We had plenty of time to appreciate historical landmarks and the fortifications' engineering. We also visited the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady and St Anthony of Mafra, second only to St Peter's in Rome in my view.
