Explore the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby, the only surviving building connected to the famous explorer. Learn about his life and adventures, see original letters, and admire models of his ships.

Discover the house where James Cook, aged 17, came to be apprenticed to Captain John Walker. See the sole surviving building connected to Cook, built in 1688. Learn about the life of a Whitby master-mariner and see the original internal decoration of the house.

Explore the garden, which was formerly a working yard for a master-mariner’s business. Admire the 18th-century plants that change with the seasons. Sit on a bench and soak up the atmosphere of the garden.

See original letters from Cook and others, including a note written by King George III expressing his regret at the news of Cook's death. Discover important correspondence from Lord Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty, who was closely involved in preparations for the Second and Third voyages.

See superb models of Cook's ships, Whitby-built collier barks, sturdy and reliable, built to service the coal trade. Admire original voyage artwork, watercolors, pencil drawings, and sketches. See Thomas Gainsborough's evocative portrait of Lord Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty, supporter and admirer of Cook.

A great deal of information is available .. can be a bit cramped on busy days

Thank you for your review. We can sometimes have a few visitors in the museum especially when there are group bookings. Being housed in a Grade 1 listed building often means much smaller rooms. Do remember that your ticket enables you to revisit the museum any time it is open during the day, week, month or season.
