This colossal structure rises 35 meters high and consists of nine stacked platforms, topped with a central dome, all adorned with over 2,600 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. At the summit, find 72 small stupas surrounding the central stupa, each containing a Buddha statue. The central stupa is empty, symbolizing the ultimate state of enlightenment. After Borobudur, head to Prambanan Temple, located approx 17 kilometers east of Yogyakarta. Prambanan is one of the largest and most beautiful Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia and was built during the 9th century under the Mataram Kingdom. Unlike Borobudur, which is Buddhist in nature, Prambanan is dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). The temples here are an extraordinary display of Hindu architecture, with their towering spires and intricate carvings. Upon arriving at Prambanan, be struck by the sight of the towering spires that reach toward the sky, surrounded by smaller temples scattered across the sprawling complex. The largest and most impressive of these is the Shiva Temple, which rises to a height of 47 meters and is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Your guide will explain the historical and religious importance of the temple, as well as the fascinating mythological stories that are depicted in the reliefs. The Prambanan temple complex consists of three main temples dedicated to the Hindu gods, as well as several smaller shrines surrounding them. After walking through the entrance, the first temple you’ll encounter is the Shiva Temple, which houses a large statue of Lord Shiva in a seated position. As you circle the temple, see reliefs depicting the story of Ramayana, one of the greatest epics in Hindu literature. The reliefs depict scenes from the life of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his battle against the demon king Ravana. Next, visit the Vishnu Temple and the Brahma Temple, each showcasing beautifully sculpted reliefs of the respective gods. These reliefs not only depict mythological stories but also represent divine powers and virtues associated with each deity.
