Tromsø: Northern Lights Tour with Local Guide and Photos

This Northern Lights tour is led by a friendly local guide who knows the region’s nature and culture, and who ensures that your journey is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable. We leave Tromsø’s city lights behind and travel to selected locations that offer the best chances of witnessing the Northern Lights illuminating the night sky. This is a unique opportunity to experience the magical Arctic atmosphere. This is a small-group experience, limited to a maximum of 19 guests to ensure comfort, flexibility, and personal attention.

Your journey begins in Tromsø city center, where you’ll meet your guide and driver and board our comfortable minibus. The tour duration is flexible, usually lasting between 4 to 8 hours depending on weather conditions and Northern Lights activity. Based on the latest weather updates and our local knowledge, we head out in search of clear skies – along the coast, into inland valleys, or even across the border to Finland. The chase for the best conditions is often an adventure, with stops to look for stars and assess the latest weather data. Traveling in a minibus with a small group gives us more flexibility and allows us to adjust the route as needed to maximize your chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

When the Northern Lights appear, we take time to enjoy the moment in the beautiful Arctic surroundings. Your guide will capture portraits of anyone who wishes, using professional camera equipment to preserve the experience. If you'd like to take your own photos, we’re happy to help you with camera settings and tips for photographing the aurora. We offer hot drinks, snacks, and when possible, a cozy bonfire. You’re always welcome to warm up inside the minibus, and thermal suits are available if needed.

On the tour, your guide will share stories and scientific insights about the Northern Lights and everyday life in Arctic Norway, adding depth and meaning to the experience.

The strength, colors, shape and movement of the Northern Lights are often changing and different throughout the evening, and how the Northern Lights appear also varies from one evening to the next. The Northern Lights can be soft and calm or wild and vivid, with colors ranging from faint to vibrant. Therefore, two displays are never the same, and that’s what makes it so exciting for everyone, even if you have seen the Northern Lights many times, or for the first time.

At the end of the night, we return you to the same central Tromsø location where we started.
