York: City Highlights Small Group Walking Tour

York: City Highlights Small Group Walking Tour

Why follow the crowds? At Yorktour we believe a great tour should also be a fun conversation, which is why we guarantee there will be no more than eight participants so everyone can ask questions and no-one needs to worry about being left at the back! This family-friendly walking tour includes all the key sights - including the exterior of the Minster and the celebrated Shambles - though we will also lead you deep into the medieval maze of ‘Snickelways’ to follow in the footsteps of the Romans and Vikings who created York. Hidden behind the starting point of the central library we enter the tranquil, green oasis of the Museum Gardens - a Victorian botanic landscape which contains the remains of the Roman fortress, a Saxon-era tower and the spectacular ruins of St Mary’s Abbey. From here it is a short walk to the Minster - the largest medieval gothic cathedral in the country - which has dominated the city’s skyline for over 900 years (please note admission to the Minster isn't included, but we'll give you all the details from the outside). The Minster lies at the heart of a warren of ancient streets whose layout is Viking in origin. You’ll hear tales of Nordic invasion while delving deep into the maze of secret passages known as ‘Snickelways’; passing an unhappy mermaid and a little red devil as well as catching a glimpse of a 15th Century banqueting hall. Finally you’ll emerge into the Shambles, York’s best-known cobbled street - once a row of butchers, now instantly recognisable to Harry Potter fans as the inspiration for Diagon Alley.

I booked a tour in York expecting to be part of a group of eight, but as it turned out, I was the only one who had booked that day. Despite this, my guide, Alfred, gave a fantastic tour that felt just as engaging and well-paced as if there had been a full group. Alfred’s knowledge of York’s history was incredible, and his storytelling made the city’s past come alive. From famous landmarks to hidden corners, he shared fascinating details that I wouldn’t have discovered on my own. The tour felt personal, with plenty of time to ask questions and explore the stories behind York’s rich heritage. Even though I was the only participant, Alfred’s enthusiasm never wavered. He was friendly, professional, and clearly passionate about the history of York. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting—whether you’re in a group or solo, you’ll have a great experience!

On 1/34/25 I took a tour of York with four other family members. It was quite a blustery day, in fact so windy many trains to York were either delayed or cancelled. We persevered and our rain made it to York. We had a wonderful guide, Alfred. He met us at the library and off we went on the tour. It was obvious that Alfred loved his work. He was animated, charming and so very animated. He was a pure joy and we all had a wonderful time with him.

Alfred was excellent. Very engaged and very engaging - he brought York to life. Certainly wouldn’t have come across lots of the things he showed us - and went back to some.
