Sorrento: Herculaneum Skip-the-Line Tour by Express Train

The organisation of the tour was excellent and our guide around Herculaneum (Nello) was very knowledgeable and we appreciated his enthusiasm and passion for archaeology. Our tour was greatly enhanced by him. However, The Campania Express from Sorrento to Herculaneum (Ercol Scavi) had a few glitches. Although we had booked seats in a numbered carriage, the train’s carriages did not have apparent numbers. At Sorrento, the train was late and all entry doors were locked apart from one manned by the train crew. This lead to much angst from concerned passengers but we all eventually boarded and were told where our seats were. On the return, Ercol automatic station gates would not accept our QR codes and we all needed assistance to get to the platform. Finally there were no electronic notice boards on the platform (the one we needed was marked “No Napoli”) and we asked passengers on the arriving trains for Sorrento as the front of the train’s lacked a destination sign. Mamma Mia!

Tour was great. The transport was explained well by the man at the office. The train was well organised and on time. The tour guide was exceptional. English was good and her knowledge was really great and made the tour even more interesting. The site was reasonably quiet and really interesting and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
