Things to do in Skógar

On this full-day tour, you’ll follow the coastline from Reykjavík into the volcanic and glaciated wonderland that is Iceland's south coast. Walk behind the thundering veil of spray at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and take in the incredible views from the top of the Skógafoss waterfall. Your tour begins with a drive through lava fields, passing by the active Hengill volcano, and then down to rich coastal farmlands. On clear days you’ll be able to see the Hekla volcano, and in the distance the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajökull volcano rises majestically above the coastal mountains. Just a few kilometers off the coastline and easily visible are the volcanic Westman Islands, an archipelago of around 15 small islands, only one of which is inhabited. Stop at the Sólheimajökull glacier, which is every photographer’s dream. Next on the itinerary is the Reynisfjara black sand beach. See the powerful Atlantic waves crashing on the black sands, the jagged basalt sea stacks and the huge basalt-column cave. Next you’ll head to the coastal village of Vik, the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the island’s main ring road. Despite its small size (291 inhabitants), it is the largest settlement for 70 kilometers. On your way back to Reykjavík, you’ll stop by the powerful Skógafoss waterfall for a short walk up a flight of steps to admire one of Iceland´s most scenic views. The view takes in glaciers, volcanoes and black sandy beaches. The last stop is at the 60-meter-high Seljalandsfoss waterfall, best known for the hidden pathway behind and around it.

On our glacier lagoon day tour, we’ll go for a drive along the south coast of Iceland heading to Europe’s largest glacier; Vatnajökull. As we drive along Iceland’s epic South Coast, we will visit Iceland’s most beautiful natural attractions. Vatnajökull is the largest ice cap in Iceland, covering more than 8 percent of the country. In total Vatnajökull covers 8,100 km2 (3,100 sq mi) which is about the size of Delaware! Travel along the scenic south coast and admire views of black sand beaches and dramatic rock formations before arriving at the extraordinary Glacier Lagoon. Marvel at a landscape comprising of crystal clear water and floating icebergs as you explore the area. As we arrive at Vatnajökull National Park you’ll start to feel the true force of nature, which becomes apparent when we reach the large glacial lake Jökulsárlón on the south-east corner of Vatnajökull National Park. The lagoon developed after the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier started receding around the 1930s. The lagoon has grown since then at varying rates due to the melting of the glaciers. We’ll also explore other wonders of Vatnajökull National Park. Including the Diamond Beach, Fjallsárjökull, and Skaftafell National Park. The movie starts with a historic overview of eruptions in Iceland and then goes through the latest eruptions in Iceland. Only footage in the highest possible quality is used, shot in 4K or better. There is no vocal narrative (voice-over) - only video and sound, presenting a story that will leave you breathless due to the forces of Icelandic nature. The movie starts with a short overview of the eruptions in Iceland, starting with the Katla eruption in 1918, Hekla in 1947, Askja in 1961, Surtsey in 1963, the Westman Islands in 1973, Krafla in 1975, and many more. Finally, you will learn about 2010 and the Fimmvörðuháls eruption followed by Ejafjallajökull which blocked all air traffic. You will also find out about the Grímsvötn eruption in 2011 and Holuhraun in 2014-2015 and the latest eruptions in Fagradalsfjall or Fagradalseldar as we call the series of eruptions. You will leave with a better understanding of the magnitude of these eruptions and what effects it has on the inhabitants of this rugged island.

We start the tour from Reykjavik and drive through the Hellisheidi Pass, passing through rugged lava fields with steam jets from a geothermal power plant at the base of Hengill Volcano. After crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, we shall drive through the lowlands and stop at a gas station in Hvolsvollur. We then continue to the stunningly beautiful Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, at 63 m/210 ft. Here, we can follow the trail behind the waterfall. Not far from Seljalandsfoss, there is another waterfall called Glufrabui. It is a 40 m/130 ft high waterfall cascading into a gorge with breathtaking scenery. We then drive east along farms at the foot of the cliffs of Mount Eyjafjol. Our next stop is the mighty 60 m/200 ft Skogafoss waterfall, fed by water flowing from the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers. This majestic waterfall is one of the most visited places in Iceland. After visiting the waterfall, we stop for lunch at a bistro bar in Skogar. Afterward, we will visit Dyrholaey, a rocky headland jutting out into the ocean in the southernmost part of the country. The Atlantic Ocean and its foamy waves wash the black sand at the foot of Dyrholaey. From here, we can enjoy the varied landscapes of the Myrdalur valley, its green fields, and pastures. We continue our trip and stop for a walk along the coastline of Reynisfjara Beach, considered the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland, with unique vertical basalt columns reminiscent of a pyramid with stone steps. In the water opposite the beach, you will see Reynisdrangar, stunningly shaped basalt rocks. However, watch for solid waves and don’t get too close to the water. From the black sand beach, we drive towards Reykjavik and stop at the Sólheimajökull glacier, the tongue of Myrdalsjökull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. Here, we can follow the trail to enjoy the view of the glacier from a short distance. After visiting the Solheimajokull glacier, we will return to Reykjavik.
