Group Tour to Gyumri: City tour, Monasteries and Culture

Explore Armenia’s cultural soul in Gyumri — the country’s second-largest city and one of its most atmospheric destinations. Known throughout history as Kumayri, Alexandrapol, and later Leninakan, Gyumri dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. Despite a long and eventful past, its historic Old Town has been beautifully preserved, especially in the city center. As you stroll its streets, you'll admire traditional Armenian architecture and feel the city's vibrant spirit. Every building in Gyumri has a story to tell. Beyond the impressive churches and charming homes, what makes this city truly special is its unique mood — a lively blend of art, humor, and resilience. It’s no coincidence that Gyumri is known as Armenia’s capital of humor, crafts, and performing arts. During the city tour, you'll also visit the Black Fortress — a military structure built in 1834 after the Second Russian-Persian War. Made of dark volcanic stone, this circular fortress once played a key defensive role. Its innovative drainage system still impresses visitors. Today, it stands as both a historic landmark and a cultural venue, offering panoramic views and powerful echoes of the past. Another highlight of the tour is Harichavank Monastery, located on the northern slope of Mount Aragats. This medieval complex includes two main churches — St. Gregory and St. Astvatsatsin — along with a bell tower, chapel, school, and more. Though its earliest origins are unclear, inscriptions suggest the site dates back to the 7th century. Harichavank became a major center of education in the 13th century, and even famed Armenian writer Avetik Isahakyan studied here. This tour offers more than just sightseeing — it’s a journey through time, tradition, and the unmatched charm of Gyumri. Travel with a local guide, dive into history, and experience the heart of Shirak.
