Matera: Complete Guided Walking Tour of the Sassi

The Walking Guided Tour of the Sassi starts in Piazza Pascoli with a historical and anthropological introduction of the Sassi neighborhoods. The tour continues through the historic center. Along the way, the guide will illustrate Baroque churches such as the Church of Purgatory and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi. After visiting Piazza Vittorio Veneto - the main square of the historic center - the guide will lead you to explore an extraordinary hypogeum environment and, afterward, typically furnished cave-house with household furniture and work tools used by farmers in the fields. Crossing the Barisano neighborhood you enter the Sasso Caveoso area, dominated by the Monterrone cliff. On the top of the cliff, as indicated by a wrought iron cross, there are two ancient places of worship: the two churches of Madonna dell'Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone completely carved into the rock. The tour continues with the visit to a rock-hewn church.

The Tuk Tuk driver quide was wonderful Francesco was proud of his city and on nearly two hours showed us lots. First we went in the town where we were showed a cave people lived in. Then we went out of town. Particularly the view from the other side of the valley was a great view. Do not mix it with a 45 min town tour. We definitely can recommend to go on the 1.5 hour tour much better . He later dropped us at a very nice restaurant. He also was very caring for me with my mobility difficulty.

We loved Matera and had an excellent, knowledgeable guide. However we booked the tour as it was the only one that included the Church of Santa Maria de Idris as we particularly wanted to visit this church. Unfortunately we were really disappointed as we did not go to this church,
