From Rome: Ostia Antica Guided Half-Day Trip by Train

We highly recommend this trip. Alberto was our guide. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. A convenient, short trip on the train to Ostia. The ruins are well preserved and the still-standing walls give a strong impression of how high the buildings were. Original frescoes and other art work are still hanging. The commerce areas and the bath house were some of the highlights. The restaurant on site had good sandwiches and deserts. We would recommend a guide to provide the tour because having someone like Alberto, who is trained in the history and the archaeology, and also fluent in English, is necessary to enjoy the full experience as a first time visitor.

On this occasion I was doing the Ostia Antica tour just for myself and I can fully affirm that Angellina was the consummate local guide: scholarly and highly knowledgeable (she is also a University professor!), yet fun and down to earth; passionate about her subjects; excellent on logistics and timing and a true professional communicator. Ostia Antica is a bit off the beaten tourist path, which makes it all the more attractive: no throngs of tourists, lots of beautiful open countryside around the site; and a treasure trove of Roman ruins (quite comparable in size to Pompeii) made all the more vibrant and exciting by Angellina’s artful storytelling.
