In the new etching attic, you’ll learn more about Rembrandt’s etching techniques. It’s like looking over the artist’s shoulder. 01/02/2025 - 04/05/2025 De illusionist. Samuel van Hoogstraten Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678), a name to remember. He learned and worked with Rembrandt, in the pupils’ studio of the Rembrandt House. Of all Rembrandt’s students, he became the most successful. During his lifetime, that is. Because, after the 17th century, he was forgotten by the general public, despite the fact that he was a learned artist who constantly experimented with different subjects and optical tricks. He was a pioneer of illusionism: the 3D artist of his time. Later in life, he wrote a famous book full of instruction for new generations of painters. This was his intellectual masterpiece. High time or a renewed introduction. In this exhibition you will get to know Samuel van Hoogstraten, discover the art of illusion and get to try it out yourself: see past the trickery and create your own optical illusion.

Amsterdam: Anne Frank Walking Tour - Guided in EN/DE/IT/ES

Amsterdam: Anne Frank Walking Tour - Guided in EN/DE/IT/ES

Get to know one of the most important facets of the city and immerse yourself in the World War II history, current affairs and culture of the Jews of Amsterdam with an experienced German or English-speaking guide. The Jews, expelled by the Spanish Inquisition, transformed Amsterdam into one of the wealthiest commercial cities in Europe and thereby influenced the cityscape significantly. This is how the Jodenbuurt was founded with its most well-known part the Jewish Triangle. The tour will take you through this area with interesting stories and illustrate why it was especially this piece of land that the Jews wanted to inhabit. Not only Jews settled here. Non-Jews like the famous painter Rembrandt van Rijn also had their domicile in the middle of the Jewish quarter.  But even in Amsterdam, Jewish history is not just about success and good life. The strong discrimination experienced by the Jews by the Nazi Germans also ended in Amsterdam with the Holocaust during World War II.  Learn about the young and courageous Anne Frank, who was one of the Jews hiding not to get deported. While hiding she wrote her famous diary. Her diary will accompany the tour and exemplify the grief the Jewish community had to undergo. Thousands of people were deported and hardly anyone came back. But not all Amsterdammers wanted to accept this. Learn about the February Strike in 1941, but above all: explore the courageous resistance by Jews and non-Jews, who saved many lives while endangering their own.  Pass by the Portuguese synagogue on the tour and see important testimonies such as Stolpersteine, the gate of the old plague cemetery and monuments commemorating the courageous resistance of the Third Reich and World War II.  Also, discover how the Jewish community lives today in multicultural Amsterdam. Join this tour to explore the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam during World War II and today, while following the moving story of Anne Frank.

Amsterdam: Guided Anne Frank Small Group Walking Tour

Amsterdam: Guided Anne Frank Small Group Walking Tour

Explore Amsterdam's rich history on our Anne Frank Walking Tour, featuring key historical sites that paint a vivid picture of the city's past and its connection to World War II. Begin at the Portuguese Synagogue, a stunning 17th-century Sephardic synagogue, renowned for its vast interior and breathtaking wooden vaulted ceilings, preserved without modern lights or heating to maintain authenticity. Next, see the Holocaust Memorial designed by Daniel Libeskind. Its anticipated completion promises a profound architectural homage to the Dutch victims of the Holocaust, adding a significant layer to the city's historical landscape. You’ll also visit the location of the Auschwitz Memorial in Wertheimpark, a moving installation by Jan Wolkers featuring broken mirrors that poignantly reflect the sky in fragments, symbolizing the shattered lives from the atrocities of Auschwitz. Then, explore the Rembrandt House Museum, where the famed painter Rembrandt lived and worked, now meticulously restored to its original state and showcasing his etchings, personal items, and painting techniques. From here, see the Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam’s first Protestant church, which highlights the city's architectural evolution with its iconic tower that provides stunning city views. Although now a municipal information center, it remains a significant historical site. Conclude with a visit to the Anne Frank Statue near the Anne Frank House, a touching tribute to Anne’s enduring legacy and a reminder of the consequences of intolerance.

unforgettable thanks to an exceptional guide! During our visit to the history of Anne Frank we were lucky to be accompanied by a passionate and extremely competent guide. She adapted perfectly to our pace and took the time to explain every detail in French, making the story even more lively and accessible. Very professional, she is also incredibly pleasant and friendly. Her enthusiasm and kindness made this visit captivating, the time passed far too quickly! She was able to combine historical facts and poignant anecdotes, plunging us into the heart of this period with great emotion and respect. And the cherry on the cake, she gave us excellent advice and recommendations to fully enjoy Amsterdam after the visit. Thanks to her, we not only learned a lot, but also had a truly unique and enriching time. If you are looking for a guide who combines knowledge, passion and humanity
