From Samos: Day Trip to Patmos Island

From Samos: Day Trip to Patmos Island

Depart Samos from the port of Pythagorion and relax on the 2.5-hour crossing to the island of Patmos, 32 miles to the south. Upon arrival, take a guided bus tour to the Cave of the Apocalypse, where John of Patmos is said to have received the visions he later recorded in the New Testament Book of Revelation. Continue to the village of Chora to explore the historic Monastery of Saint John the Theologian for 1 hour. Marvel at the fortress-like building, built by the soldier-priest John Christodoulos after the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos gifted the island to him in the 11th century. See rare texts and ancient iconostasis in the museum and get a staggering view of the island from the monastery complex at the top of the hill. Return to the town of Skala, where you can find a nice spot for lunch and explore in your own time before the return crossing to Samos in the afternoon.

Patmos: Monastery of St. John & Cave of the Apocalypse Tour

Patmos: Monastery of St. John & Cave of the Apocalypse Tour

Begin your journey at the picturesque harbor of Skala, dominated by the imposing silhouette of the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, perched on the hill above. Departing from Skala harbor, ascend to the village of Chora, an architectural gem characterized by gleaming white houses that stand in striking contrast to the Monastery’s austere, fortified structure. Founded in 1088 by the Blessed Christodoulos, Servant of Christ, the Monastery of St. John was constructed as a bastion of faith and learning. Encircled by formidable walls crowned with battlements, the Monastery comprises eight chapels and a courtyard paved with pebbles. Elegant arches frame the entrance to the chapel, where intricate frescoes offer a glimpse into the island’s rich artistic and religious heritage. The Monastery's museum houses a remarkable collection of ecclesiastical treasures, including jeweled chalices, crowns, and crosses. Admire rare manuscripts dating back to 1073, revered icons, and religious paintings—most notably, an original work by El Greco. Although the Monastery’s historic library remains closed to the public, selected exhibits are on display within the museum. Next, proceed to the sacred Grotto of St. John, integrated within a 17th-century monastic complex. This revered cave is traditionally believed to be the place where St. John the Theologian resided between AD 95 and 97, during which time he composed the Apocalypse (Book of Revelation). Within the grotto, view the stone upon which the saint is said to have rested his head. Following this spiritually enriching and historically resonant experience, return by coach to the port, carrying with you enduring impressions of one of Christianity’s most hallowed sites.

Good! Long travel time though. Travel from kokkari to the boat (while picking up others) was another hour on top of the 2,5 hour boat ride. Of course we knew this but still didn’t really fully realize it until the moment of. Trip itself was great. We had a great guide who could tell us a lot about the places we went to. Great storyteller and nice guy. We did not have a lot of time in some places for example the cave of john (not their fault, other groups waiting) which was a shame. Guide still managed to tell us a lot later outside the cave. Free time was exactly enough time. We could grab lunch and do some shopping! Overall a great experience. Maybe just a little rushed :)

Vera was our tour guide on Patmos. She did a fantastic job. She was very knowledgeable, full of energy and enthusiasm, and clearly had a passion for connecting with her audience. Patmos is a great combination of history and spirit and Vera communicated them both.
