Dinant’s name originates from the Celtic “Divo Nanto”, which means “Sacred Valley”. This little town is dramatically perched on the narrow banks of the River MeuseI. It is a reference to the knot in the rope belt worn by Franciscan friars who lived in a monastery in this square until the French Revolutionary Wars. The monastery was torn down to construct the city hall, and the square was crowned by the equestrian statue of Duke William II.
