Western Serbia 1-Day Tour of the Key Sites from Belgrade

You will be collected from your accommodation in Belgrade and driven to the countryside of Western Serbia, which is known for its wild and untouched nature. For just over two hours, you can relax and enjoy the beautiful landscapes while listening to interesting stories about this part of the country from your guide.  Your first stop will be the Sargan Eight train, and we'll ride this narrow railway. You will pass several viewpoints of the stunning Mokra Gora along the way. The authentic cars with wooden seats, wood-burning stoves, and characteristic rattling sound will take you back to 1925, when this railway was put into operation. After the ride, continue your journey to the nearby Mećavnik, which is known as the Wooden City. The famous director Emir Kusturica decided to build it while shooting his film Life is a Miracle. Here, you will stop to enjoy a traditional lunch. You will stop at an amazing viewpoint and then head to Bajina Bašta, a small town in the foothills of Mt. Tara. Here, you will see the world-famous attraction The House on the Drina. This is an isolated house made of logs perched precariously on a river stone. After the meal, you will head back to Belgrade, arriving late in the afternoon.

I had the pleasure of joining a day tour to Mokra Gora, Drina River House, and the Šargan Eight — and it turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of my Balkan trip, thanks to our amazing guide, Alex. Alex is incredibly knowledgeable, especially when it comes to Serbian history and culture. He shared fascinating stories at every stop that really brought the places to life. Beyond being well-informed, he’s also warm, cooperative, and genuinely passionate about ensuring everyone has a great time. The itinerary was perfectly paced, the landscapes were breathtaking, and Alex made sure we had enough time at each location while also keeping things organized. As a solo traveler, I couldn’t have asked for a better guide or group atmosphere. Highly recommended — especially if you want your journey to be meaningful, not just scenic.

I went on a day trip to the Drina region with Alex on Saturday 14 June. Being a history buff, Alex was very informative throughout the entirety of the trip, giving us a clear lowdown of how the various legends (such as the famous vampire Sava Savanovic), how Drina river house came to be. Iva, the tour operator, also offered to send me to the airport directly en route back into Belgrade, making the trip a seamless experience.

It was a beautiful long day. We saw a lot, beautiful nature, great landscapes, and the Kusturica estate. Nice little group of 5. Thanks to our guide and driver.
