From York: Herriot and Yorkshire Dales Day Trip

From York: Herriot and Yorkshire Dales Day Trip

Start your tour from York city center. Stop at the traditional market town of Masham in Lower Wensleydale, which gained its market charter over 700 years ago in 1251. Here you can learn some of the Town’s history from your guide and see the remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross shaft, thought to be around 1300 years old, at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, explore the quaint shops or just enjoy a leisurely Yorkshire brew and some cake in one of the cafes on the square – the choice is yours! Head out across Masham Moor where the sheep roam freely amongst the Heather and vast open landscape on our way over the tops to Nidderdale. The fantastic views and scenery over Gouthwaite Reservoir and miles of drystone walls make it perfect for some great photo stops. Arrive in the picturesque town of Grassington, famous for its role as the fictional town of ‘Darrowby’ in the new ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ television series, first aired in 2020. Here you will have 1.5 hours free time to explore the shops, Cafes and filming locations or even pop into the Devonshire Arms pub (The Drovers in All Creatures Great and Small) for a drink with the locals! We make our way to the beautiful Linton Falls. It is only a very short drive away so, if you prefer, you have the option to take the short walk from the Visitor Centre car park down the old stone path to the falls at Linton and meet your guide on the bridge over the river Wharfe. We follow the meandering route of the River Wharfe passing through the village of Burnsall and stopping at the historical ruin of Barden Tower, a 12th Century hunting lodge, once the seat of administration for Barden hunting forest and the residence of Henry Clifford, the Shepherd Lord. Arriving at Bolton Abbey home to the 12th Century ruins of Bolton Priory an Augustinian Monastery founded in 1154 and destroyed in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the reign of King Henry VIII. Today it looks extremely picturesque situated on the edge of the river Wharfe and for those of you feeling brave enough you can attempt to cross the river on the famous stepping stones… just don’t fall in! We depart Bolton Abbey and make our way back to York and say our goodbyes.

From Manchester: Dales and Brontë Country Small Group Tour

From Manchester: Dales and Brontë Country Small Group Tour

Say farewell to Manchester and head into a fictional land on this day trip. Visit the hillside home of the Brontë family in the town of Haworth, see the market town of Grassington, and visit the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct. Start your day with a visit to the hillside home of the Brontë family in the town of Haworth. Wander the town they once called home and soak up the history. You may even be able to visit the former Brontë home, now The Brontë Parsonage Museum (however, please note their opening times vary and may not always be open while on tour). As for the lovely town of Haworth itself, it is quaint, quiet, and quality, the essentials for any English village. Delight in the shops, cafes, and cobblestoned streets. Wandering around, maybe you’ll see why the Brontë sisters were inspired by the community they grew up in. For fans of the series "The Railway Children," make sure to check out the steam railway at Oakworth Station just down the road, which was featured in the production. Grab yourself a bite for lunch at one of the many cafes or get some takeaway and enjoy pretty views as you wander the area. Continue through the lovely landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales. It’s a breathtaking view to be sure. Meandering hills, craggy moorlands, and romantic valleys stretch out all around you. But what you take notice of most is the limestone. From cliffs to caves, outcrops to scars, this moody rock is found at every turn. Arrive at the market town of Grassington, often referred to as the "beating heart of the Yorkshire Dales." Recognize it as the fictional market town of Darrowby in the series of All Creatures Great & Small. Just a short 5-minute walk from the car park, you'll find the beauty of Linton Falls. If there's been plenty of rain, you'll hear their thunderous call as you approach. Have free time in Grassington to explore and grab a bite to eat. Continue to Aysgarth Falls, a three-stepped waterfall that has drawn people to it for over 200 years, including the famous, from poet William Wordsworth to painter JMW Turner. Recognize them from the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Arrive at Wensleydale Creamery, custodians of a 1000-year-old heritage. From their iconic, creamy, crumbly classic Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese to the rich, buttery flavors of Fountains Gold, this is a cheese lover's dream. Finish your day at the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct. A proud display of Victorian engineering, this impressive statement structure has incredible views of the Three Peaks mountains. After a few photos and a bit of awe, jump back on the bus and head back to Manchester, arriving in the early evening.
