Journey into the mountain is a journey through time – to be more precise, through 2600 years of salt mining on the Dürrnberg. Outfitted in white miners’ overalls, you will set out in search of white gold – through four entire epochs of human history: Your path begins with modern mining and salt production as it is done today. It then leads through the murky Middle Ages and ultimately ends with the Celtic miners of the Iron Age. A raft ride across a mystical salt lake enthralls you amid the iridescent world of Baroque Salzburg. At the end of your journey, you will have a true grasp of why salt is indeed regarded as the essence of life. And we shouldn’t forget to mention: During your tour, you will cross the subterranean border between Austria and Germany, ride on a mine train, and slither down two miners’ slides deeper and deeper into the mountain. A grand adventure indeed! Visit the salt manufactory on the Celtic Mountain, you have the unique opportunity to watch an extraordinary salt being created. Bad Ischler Salzzart is extraordinary for several reasons: Here, in Austria’s only showcase saltworks and under the keen eye of a master salt-maker, the natural brine of the Dürrnberg gives birth to pyramid-shaped salt crystals. Look over this craftsman’s shoulder as he skillfully goes about his work.

About 250 million years ago, a massive salt lake covered the region we now call Austria and Germany. As the water evaporated, thick salt deposits remained, later pushed up into the Alps by powerful tectonic forces — a process that continues to this day. Humans quickly discovered salt’s value. By 4,000 BC, people were preserving food with it. The Celts in Dürrnberg began mining salt around the 6th century BC, creating a thriving community. By the Middle Ages, Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops recognized salt as a key source of wealth, funding the city’s stunning architecture. Today, you can walk through this incredible history at Salzwelten Salzburg — home to the world’s oldest accessible salt mine. Join us and uncover the magic of salt — the mineral that shaped the world!

Our family had a great time on the salt mine tour. Nicolaus was our super friendly and informative guide and he helped make it so much fun. The history of the mine is fascinating and they have done such a great job of setting up the tour and the mini activities to do during. Both the adults and the kids (14, 11) enjoyed it. We went to the first morning tour (9 am) and it was perfect as we had an almost private tour with only one other group of 4 with us and we were back in town by noon. Definitely recommend this unique and fun (slides, boat across subterranean salt lake, mine cart track rides) activity.

The tour is like something out of Disney, with music, projectors, slides and a train ride inside the mine. There was even a boat ride 1000m underground... it was an adventure.
