Day 3: Explore South Iceland The drive to Kirkjubæjarklaustur will take you through some of Iceland's most breathtaking landscapes, introducing you to the country's diverse natural wonders. This route promises an unforgettable exploration of Iceland's southern coast, marked by waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic terrain. Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland's southernmost village, Reynisfjara, and the basalt sea stacks of Reynisdrangar. Also stop by Eldhraun lava field, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon ancient canyon, carved by glacial meltwater, and end the day at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a small village with a big history. Day 4: Skaftafell & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon This day promises an exploration of glaciers, lagoons, and black sand beaches, encapsulating the dramatic beauty of the Icelandic landscape. Your first destination is Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park, a paradise for nature lovers. Further east lies Jökulsárlón, a breathtaking glacier lagoon filled with floating icebergs. After Jökulsárlón its time to head back to your accommodation in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. Day 5: Back to Reykjavík and the Blue Lagoon From Kirkjubæjarklaustur drive back towards Reykjavík. Along the way, revisit or discover new wonders like the vast Eldhraun lava field, the black sands of Reynisfjara near Vík, and the towering waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Once in Reykjavík we recommend an afternoon visit to the Blue Lagoon, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula. You can walk right between them! Thingvellir is the birthplace of Iceland’s parliament, Althing, founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest democratic institutions in the world. Walk through the Almannagjá fissure and visit the Öxarárfoss waterfall. 2. Geysir Geothermal Area Home to Strokkur, one of the most reliable geysers in the world, erupting every 5-10 minutes with boiling water reaching up to 20-30 meters high. Geysir, the now mostly dormant geyser, gave its name to all geysers globally. The hot springs in this area boil at over 100°C (212°F), with surrounding sulfur deposits creating a unique, colorful landscape. 3. Gullfoss Waterfall Gullfoss is fed by the Hvítá River, plummeting 32 meters (105 feet) in two dramatic tiers. The name Gullfoss means "Golden Falls," as on sunny days, the mist creates stunning rainbows over the waterfall. The waterfall was saved from being harnessed for hydroelectric power by Sigríður Tómasdóttir, an early environmentalist who fought to preserve its natural beauty. 4. Kerið Crater The crater is around 3,000 years old and known for its red volcanic rock and bright blue lake. Kerið is part of Iceland’s volcanic landscape and one of its most striking crater lakes. Enjoy the unique contrast between the red rock and turquoise water.
