Inhabited from the Neolithic period to Roman times, it thrived again during the Hellenistic period when taken by Roman Quintus Caecilius Metelus Creticus in 67 B.C. Discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos, and excavated by Arthur Evans from 1900 to 1931, the palace was restored to preserve its monuments. Today, visitors marvel at Knossos's ancient splendor, rich history, and unique window into Minoan ingenuity and artistry, imagining the vibrant life that once flourished here. HERAKLION CITY- ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM History thrives in Heraklion's old town, much like in many Greek cities. From the old Venetian Harbour, August 25th Street leads to the heart of the old town. The central square, surrounded by cafes, stores, and restaurants, is highlighted by the Lions Fountain, built by the Venetian governor Morozini in 1628. The Town Hall is now located in the Venetian Loggia, a building from the same era, adjacent to the plateau and the Byzantine-era Agios Titos cathedral. From the central square, the "Central Market" street ends at "Kornarou Square" with a coffee house situated at "Koubes," a Turkish fountain, and nearby is the "Bembo fountain" constructed by a Venetian nobleman. To the left, "Averof Street" leads to "Eleftherias Square," Heraklion's main square where the Archaeological Museum is located. To the right, "Kyrillou Loukareos Street" leads to Agios Minas cathedral and the Agia Aikaterini Museum. The Archaeological Museum is renowned across Europe and is a must-visit. Throughout the old city, visitors can stroll along the Venetian walls that converge at the old port and "Koules," the fortress dominating the old harbour. George was a fantastic guide! He was so caring and patient with us on our private family tour. He drove us everywhere and really made the experience worthwhile. This was definitely one amazing trip! The olive mill was a pleasure to visit and the light lunch was exquisite. We even got to meet their sweet dog, Hanna and she was so friendly and even walked with us on the tour! We visited a pottery workshop where the ceramic artist let us make a pot ourselves and it was so interesting!! It was definitely a bucket list item. We got to taste 4 unique wine varieties: 2 red wines (one of them sweet), a white wine and a rose. Each was pure bliss. We concluded the tour with a divine interaction with one of the reverends staying there and it was a true blessing. We got to go inside the church and it felt like such a heavenly experience. This whole trip was well worth it and I would go again!!! Thank you George for a wonderful time. Without you, this one-in-a-lifetime experience wouldn’t have bee

Fantastic walking tour with Marina, who was not only warm and welcoming, but also exceptionally knowledgeable about the history of Heraklion. She met my wife and me near the main park and guided us on a relaxed stroll along the impressive city walls, originally built by Arab pirates after they seized the city from the Byzantine Empire. Marina, who plans to begin her studies in archaeology, brought the city’s layered past to life. She explained how Heraklion — once known as Candia — was shaped by a series of rulers: Venetians, Ottomans, Egyptians, and ultimately unified with Greece in 1913. With each chapter, the city’s architecture and culture evolved, and Marina helped us understand how those changes are still visible today. We ended the tour with a light mezze lunch at a traditional taverna near the Venetian Port — the perfect way to reflect on what we’d seen. If you’re curious about Heraklion’s rich history and want a guide who truly loves the subject book Marina!

The Heraklion Half-Day Tour was spectacular - everything we wanted and more, including experiences we didn’t even know we were looking for. George was absolutely fantastic: punctual, professional, and full of great recommendations, from olive farms to organic wineries. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and its history, flexible with the itinerary, and a true pleasure to talk with. The van was spotless, roomy & very comfortable. Thanks to SunSud Tours, we had a fantastic time. Can’t recommend them enough!

George is super friendly, sweet and knowledgeable. He is sweet, flexible and genuinely wants you to have a good and fun time. My family was well taken care of and everyone is happy. It was definitely a sweet experience and if we had more time then we would've definitely chosen 6 hours instead of 4. I definitely recommend this experience whether you're going with your family or friends. George knows lots of good recommendations and spots, so it was definitely worth the money!

We spent a fabulous morning with our guide George. As a devoted student and teacher of history, George provided a fascinating and easily understood in-depth understanding of Heraklion, Crete. All while we enjoyed the ease of zipping all over the city on our Eco-bikes. We loved it! Best tour of our 7 days of touring the Aegean. And the tasty snack at the end was a treat!
